📌 PART 5 – “The Tenant Who Never Opens Her Door”

The room went silent.

“You what?” Aunty Sarah asked sharply.

Amaka wiped her eyes, voice shaking.

“I know her mother…
or at least—I knew her.”

We all leaned in.

“How?” the landlord asked.

Amaka looked at Chiamaka, then back at us.

“She used to be my roommate during NYSC.”

My mouth opened.

“She was your friend?”

Amaka nodded slowly.

“We lost contact after service year. She got married, moved away… I didn’t even know she had a daughter.
I only recognized Chiamaka when I saw her face under the streetlight that night.”

The nurse frowned.
“So why didn’t you tell the police any of this?”

Amaka covered her face with her hands.

“Because her mother told me something years ago… something I didn’t want to believe.”

Aunty Sarah stepped closer.
“What did she tell you?”

Amaka sniffed and whispered:

“She said her husband’s brother… that same uncle… was obsessed with her.
And that if anything ever happened to her, it would be because of him.”

The room went cold.

Chiamaka dropped her teddy bear and whispered:

“Mummy said the same thing… before she left.”

I felt chills run through my body.

Aunty Sarah immediately turned to the nurse:
“We need to alert the main office. Something is very wrong here.”

But before she could finish, the landlord’s phone rang loudly.
He stepped out to pick it.

When he returned, his face had changed—serious, tense.

“What happened?” I asked.

He swallowed hard and looked at all of us.

“That call was from the police station.
They said the man looking for this child just arrived there…”

We all held our breath.

“…and he’s on his way here.”

Chiamaka began to tremble.
She ran to Amaka and hid behind her.

And Amaka, weak as she was, pulled the child close and whispered:

“I won’t let them take you.”

📌 PART 4 – “The Tenant Who Never Opens Her Door”

When Chiamaka said those words, the whole hospital room went quiet.

Even the nurse stopped writing.

“Don’t send you back to who?” I asked gently.

Chiamaka’s eyes filled with tears.
She lowered her head and whispered:

“My uncle.”

The nurse and landlord exchanged glances.

“What happened to your parents?” I asked.

She hugged her teddy bear tighter.
“They travelled… and didn’t come back.
Uncle said I must stay with him.”

“Did he hurt you?” the nurse pressed softly.

Chiamaka didn’t answer.
She just lifted the sleeve of her small gown.

Bruises.
Old ones.
New ones.
Different colours.

Everyone gasped.

The landlord sighed heavily.
“This thing don pass compound matter.”

Amaka started crying again.

“I saw those bruises the night I found her… that’s why I couldn’t leave her with the police. I knew they would return her to him.”

The nurse stepped out and came back with a social welfare officer on duty.
A woman with calm eyes and a firm voice.

She bent down in front of Chiamaka.

“My name is Aunty Sarah.
I’m here to protect you.
Do you trust me?”

Chiamaka nodded slowly.

Aunty Sarah stood up and faced all of us.

“First, nobody is taking this child back to any abusive home.
Second, we need to find out if Amaka is telling the full truth.”

Everyone turned to Amaka.
She looked scared.

Aunty Sarah walked closer.

“Madam… if you really saved her, then you have nothing to worry about.
But if there is anything you’re hiding…
say it now.”

Amaka wiped her tears…
took a deep breath…
and said something none of us expected:

“I know her mother.”

📌 PART 3 – “The Tenant Who Never Opens Her Door”

The entire compound went silent.

Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.

The poster looked old, about two months.
Same round face…
Same small lips…
Same teddy bear.

The missing girl was Chiamaka.

The landlord swallowed hard.
“So Amaka kidnapped her?”

Before anyone could jump to conclusions, the keke rider outside shouted:

“Bring her o! She’s not breathing well!”

We rushed back to Amaka.
She was fading in and out.

At the hospital, after they stabilized her a little, the nurse asked,
“Who brought her?”

We explained everything.

When Amaka finally opened her eyes, the first word she whispered was:

“Please… don’t call the police.”

The nurse frowned. “Why?”

Tears rolled down Amaka’s face.

“I didn’t kidnap her… I saved her.”

We all looked at each other.

Amaka took a shaky breath and continued:

“I found her crying beside the highway at 11pm.
Cars were passing her like she wasn’t even there.
I took her home to keep her safe for the night…
But when I tried to take her to the police the next morning…”

She paused, voice breaking.

“…they started asking me questions like I was a criminal.
So I panicked.
And I ran.”

The room became silent.

Then she added something that shocked all of us:

“Before you judge me, ask her…
Ask Chiamaka if she wants to go back.”

We all turned slowly to the little girl standing by the door.

She hugged her teddy bear and whispered:

“Please… don’t send me

📌 PART 2 – “The Tenant Who Never Opens Her Door”

We rushed into the room.
Amaka was on the floor, breathing weakly, her face pale like someone who hadn’t eaten in days.

“Aunty! Wake up!” I shouted, tapping her shoulders.

The little girl stood beside me, hugging her teddy bear tightly.

The landlord entered, confused.
“Who’s this child? Amaka lives alone!”

Nobody had an answer.

We lifted Amaka and rushed her outside where there was more breeze.
Someone ran to buy sachet water.
Another person ran to call keke to take her to the hospital.

While we were all panicking, the little girl quietly walked to the corner of the compound, sat down, and started drawing circles in the sand.

I went to her gently.
“What’s your name?”

“Chiamaka,” she said softly.

“Is Amaka your sister?”

She shook her head.

“Your auntie?”

She looked up at me with innocent eyes and said:

“She’s just the woman that found me.”

My heart skipped.

“What do you mean she found you?”

Before she could answer, the landlord shouted my name.

“Come and see something inside her room!”

We all rushed back into Room 7.

The moment I stepped in, I froze.

On the table was a police missing-child poster…
And the missing child’s face was the same little girl sitting outside.

TITLE: “The Tenant Who Never Opens Her Door”

In our compound in Ajangbadi, everyone knows one thing:
Room 7 never opens.

The lady living there—Amaka—keeps to herself.
No friends, no visitors, no loud music.
Just silence.

We only see her early in the morning when she goes to work and at night when she returns.
Even then, she walks fast like someone trying to outrun her own shadow.

Two weeks ago, something happened.

Around 2am, I woke up to drink water.
As I stepped out, I heard soft crying coming from her room.
Not loud… just deep, painful sobs.

I paused.
Should I knock?
Should I mind my business?

Before I decided, her crying stopped.

The next morning, she still came out looking normal.
No swollen eyes.
No stress.
She even greeted me with a small smile.

I told myself it was nothing…
Until that Friday evening.

NEPA took light.
Everyone came outside for fresh air.
Except Room 7.

Then suddenly—
A little girl about 4 years old quietly stepped out of Amaka’s room holding a teddy bear.

We all froze.

Because Amaka lives alone.

And nobody has ever seen a child enter or leave her room.

The little girl looked at us and said:

“Aunty said I should come outside because she’s not feeling fine.”

We ran immediately to Room 7.

When we pushed the door open, what we saw made everybody shout—

Amaka was lying on the floor… unconscious.
