‘DON’T KILL WALL GECKOS!’ VETERAN SURGEON GYOH BREAKS SILENCE ON AGE-OLD NIGERIAN MYTH

By Doosuur Dorcas | Big D News TV

A veteran Nigerian surgeon and retired Professor of Surgery, Prof. Shima Gyoh, has urged Nigerians to stop killing wall geckos.

In a post on his page, the highly respected medical expert said:

"DON’T KILL WALL GECKOS! Not dangerous to humans. Helpful friends! Swallow mosquitoes and cockroaches."

For decades, many Nigerian households have feared geckos, with stories claiming their bites, saliva, or droppings are poisonous.

But Prof. Gyoh says the opposite: they are helpful household companions that feed on mosquitoes and cockroaches.

Who is Prof. Shima Gyoh?
1. Former CMD, Jos University Teaching Hospital
2. Former DG, Federal Ministry of Health
3. Former Chairman, Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria
4. Professor of Surgery & Former Provost, Benue State University College of Health Sciences
5. Fellow, Royal College of Surgeons of England & West African College of Surgeons

Born in Gboko, Benue State, Prof. Gyoh qualified as a doctor in 1966 and has spent decades in clinical medicine, health administration, and medical education.

His message is simple: Before you kill the next gecko on your wall, remember it might be keeping your home free of insects.

Do you agree with Prof. Gyoh?
