Little Daily Expenses That Add Up Faster Than You Think

It is not the rent.
It's not the school fees.
It's not even the groceries.

It’s ₦200 here. ₦500 there. ₦1,000 that just disappeared.
The recharge card you bought without thinking.
The extra data you didn't need.
The snack at the bus stop even when you are not hungry
The "let me just send something small" to a relative who never asks how you are.
The aso-ebi for a wedding of someone you barely know.
The pepper soup after church because everyone was going.
The owambe contribution for a party you didn't even want to attend.

None of them feel like much in the moment.
That's exactly why they are so dangerous.

₦500 every day = ₦15,000 a month. ₦15,000 a month = ₦180,000 a year.
₦180,000 that never touched your savings account.

Not once.
And at the end of the year you're wondering why you're still in the same place.

It's not because you don't work hard enough.

It's because nobody taught us to respect small money.

We were taught to fear big expenses. But the small ones?
We let them bleed us quietly.

I was spending money I didn't need to spend. Every single day.

There's a woman at the bus stop near my store.
She sells roasted plantain and corn when it is corn season
And for a long time, I could not walk past her.
It didn't matter if I was hungry or not.
It didn't matter if I had plantain sitting at home.
I would buy it. Then turn around and force my girls to eat it with me so it wouldn't waste.

I didn't see it as a problem.
It was just plantain. Just a few hundred naira.

Start before you feel fully ready.

You don’t need perfect timing, you just need one brave step.

Because the life you keep imagining is waiting on the other side of action.

Tell me in the comments: If fear wasn’t a factor, what would you start today?

As a woman, you are allowed to want more.

THE FEAR I FELT BEFORE STARTING (And Why I’m Glad I Didn’t Listen to It)

Before I started my business, I was afraid.
Not just a small fear… the kind that keeps you awake at night and makes you question yourself.

I asked myself so many “what if” questions:
What if I fail?
What if nobody buys from me?
What if I lose the little money I have?
What will people say?

Am I even capable of running a business?
From the outside, it may look like people just wake up one day and become brave.

But the truth is — many of us start while our hearts are still beating fast.

Fear has a way of making you feel safer staying where you are… even when you know you are meant for more.

There was a part of me that wanted to remain comfortable. To avoid the risk. To postpone the decision.

But there was another voice — quiet, yet persistent — reminding me that my life would not change if I kept standing still.
So I made a decision.

Not because the fear disappeared…
But because my desire to grow became stronger than my fear of failing.

Let me tell you something I learned

Courage is not the absence of fear.
Courage is moving forward even when you feel unsure.

My hands were not perfectly steady when I began. I did not have everything figured out. I made mistakes. I learned along the way.

But starting opened doors I could never have imagined if I had allowed fear to win.

Today, when I look back, I realize something powerful — many of the things we are afraid of never actually happen.

And even when challenges come, we often discover strength we didn’t know we had.

If fear is the reason you have not started that thing in your heart, please hear this:
You are more capable than your doubts are telling you.

Growth often lives on the other side of fear.

You don’t have to be fearless to begin.
You just have to be willing.
So take the step.
Try the idea.

Give yourself the chance to become more.

One day, you may look back and be deeply grateful that you didn’t let fear make your decisions for you.

SIGNS A PRODUCT WILL SELL FAST (Before You Even Invest Your Money)

One mistake many people make when starting an online business in Nigeria is choosing a product based on excitement instead of evidence.

Just because you like a product… doesn’t mean people will buy it.

Before you spend your money stocking up, there are clear signs that can tell you whether a product is likely to move quickly.
Let’s talk about them.

People Are Already Searching for It

If buyers are actively looking for a product, selling becomes much easier. Search for it on Facebook Marketplace, Instagram, and popular online stores.
If you see people asking questions like:

How much?
Is this available?
Do you deliver?

That is a strong signal of demand.
Remember, it is better to enter a market where people are already buying than to struggle convincing people to want something new.

It Solves an Everyday Problem

In Nigeria especially, products that make life easier sell faster.

Think about items that help people:
✔ Save time
✔ Reduce stress
✔ Care for their children
✔ Improve their health
✔ Stay comfortable

People don’t just buy products, they buy solutions.
When a product answers a real need, it rarely stays on the shelf.

The Price Feels Comfortable

Products don’t always have to be cheap, but they should feel affordable to your target customer.

Items within a comfortable spending range tend to move faster because buyers don’t have to overthink the decision.
If someone can pay for it without serious financial pressure, your chances of quick sales increase.

You Notice Consistent Sellers, Not Just One

Healthy competition is a good sign.
If several sellers are offering the same type of product, it usually means there is steady demand.

Don’t let competition scare you. Instead, focus on what will make your service stand out, reliability, communication, and professionalism.

It Is Easy to Understand

If you need a long explanation before someone sees the value, selling may be harder.
Fast-moving products are usually simple. People understand them immediately and know why they need them.
Clarity speeds up buying decisions.

It Has Repeat Purchase Potential

Some of the most stable online businesses are built on products customers return for again and again.
When people finish a product and need another that creates consistent income instead of one-time sales.
Think long-term, not just quick wins.

Delivery Is Practical
Before choosing a product, consider logistics.
Is it easy to package?
Can it travel without getting damaged?
Will delivery costs discourage buyers?
A great product can still struggle if delivery is complicated.

A Gentle Reminder
Don’t rush to buy large quantities because you feel excited.

Test first. Observe the response. Learn what your customers prefer.
Smart business owners don’t guess — they pay attention to signals.

Starting an online business is not about luck. It is about making informed decisions again and again.
If you are planning to start, let this guide help you choose wisely and reduce unnecessary risk.
