He referenced global best practices, citing Harvard University as a leading example of effective alumni involvement.
"At Harvard, the Alumni Association plays a significant role in the University’s growth, generating over $2.3 billion annually through endowment funds. While we may not yet have that capacity, I encourage you to start with something, no matter how small. The culture of giving back should begin now. Ask yourself: what can I do for the university that made me who I am today?"
Professor Sulaiman also stressed the importance of engaging external philanthropists and stakeholders as "Friends of the University."
"In the past, we reached out to people like Aliko Dangote and the BUA Group. Even though they had no personal connection with the University, they supported us immensely. We can’t rely solely on our alumni. Let us identify individuals and organizations with the capacity to help and bring them on board."
Adding his voice at the occasion, the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic, Professor Mohammed Aliyu Bello, emphasized the vital role alumni plays in the development and financing of universities globally.
