Beckham finalises shock transfer as he signs another former Liverpool player
12 hours ago / autty
Salford City, who are co-owned by Manhcester United legends David Beckham and Gary Neville, have signed former Liverpool forward Fabio Borini.

David Beckham has not shied away from bringing in Liverpool influences at both of his co-owned clubs despite his status as a Manchester United legend - signing yet another player with strong ties to his old club's arch-rivals. The ex-England midfielder is the president and co-owner of MLS franchise Inter Miami, as well as a co-owner of League Two side Salford City.

Inter Miami appointed ex-Liverpool ace Javier Mascherano as their gaffer in November 2024, with the Argentine already guiding them to secure a spot in the end-of-season play-offs. Former Liverpool hero Luis Suarez is one of Inter Miami's key players, meanwhile - with the Uruguayan frontman netting 17 goals and providing 16 assists in all competitions this season.

However, the Liverpool connection isn't confined to Inter Miami, as there's also a significant former Reds presence at Salford - despite its links to United through Beckham and fellow co-owner Gary Neville. One-time Liverpool youth coach Karl Robinson is the current head coach at Salford, having taken up the role in January 2024, while the Ammies snapped-up former Liverpool prodigy Ben Woodburn at the beginning of last season.

Once the youngest ever goal-scorer for the Reds, before Rio Ngumoha's winner against Newcastle United in August, the versatile Welsh international has chalked up five goals and nine assists from 50 appearances since joining the club. But former Liverpool player Fabio Borini has now also joined Ben Woodburn at Salford City in a surprise move, after the League Two club announced his signing on Friday.

The ex-Italy international has signed a short-term deal with Salford, following a successful training period with the first team over the past month. He had been without a club since leaving Sampdoria last summer.

Having previously played for Chelsea, AS Roma and AC Milan, as well as Liverpool, Borini's move to a League Two side came as a surprise to many observers. However, the forward, who was named as a substitute for Saturday's match against Oldham Athletic, has shed light on his decision to join Salford.

Speaking to the club's in-house media, he said: "It's been great. I came in to train to keep myself fit in this transition between contracts," he told club media. "And Salford, the gaffer, Alex Bruce were kind enough to allow me to use the facilities and train here.

"Experience is one thing that I can bring, but it's not just about the experience that I have on the pitch. It's outside of the pitch so leading by example in training, outside training, how to manage a game.

"I've never played League Two football, so I need to learn as well from my team-mates the main characteristics of this league, but I will bring myself as an open book for my team mates to use me, learn from me or help me, so I'm very open to this challenge.

"It's a challenge I'm embracing and I chose to embrace because I needed the real football, something that warms my heart for football, not for anything else."

Borini, who previously formed an attacking partnership with Suarez at Liverpool, arrived at Anfield in a £10.5m transfer from Roma in July 2012. The striker found the net on his Anfield bow in the Europa League, although he failed to establish himself at Anfield.

The 34-year-old managed just three goals and three assists across 38 outings for the Merseyside club overall before departing for Sunderland in a £10m switch in August 2014 - having already spent the 2013/14 campaign on loan at the Stadium of Light after falling down the pecking order following the arrivals of Daniel Sturridge and Iago Aspas.

Ex-Everton and Real Madrid star in hospital after stroke
7 hours ago / autty
Former Real Madrid and Everton winger Royston Drenthe was taken to hospital after suffering a stroke on Friday.

The 38-year-old, who won LaLiga during his spell in Spain, was admitted after what Dutch reports described as a 'serious medical setback.'

A statement from FC De Rebellen, a club for 'the most rebellious, versatile and controversial former footballers from the Netherlands and Belgium', confirmed the incident and called for privacy for the player's family.

'Last Friday, Royston Drenthe suffered a stroke,' the statement read. 'Drenthe is currently being taken good care of and is in good hands. The team and those involved are hoping for a smooth recovery.

'Royston's family is asking for peace and privacy during this period so they can provide him with the support and space he needs for his recovery.'

Drenthe first rose to prominence as a teenager at Feyenoord, where his pace and powerful left foot earned him a move to Real Madrid in 2007.

He played 65 times for the Spanish giants, winning the 2007–08 LaLiga title, before spending the 2011–12 campaign on loan at Everton. During his year at Goodison Park he made 27 appearances and scored four goals under David Moyes.

After leaving Madrid, Drenthe's career included spells in England with Reading and Sheffield Wednesday, as well as moves to Russia, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates.

He earned one senior cap for the Netherlands and retired from professional football in 2023.

Since hanging up his boots, Drenthe has worked in several fields outside the game. He appeared as a television pundit in Spain and the Netherlands, launched a short-lived rap career, and once opened his own clothing store.

He also trained as a health worker in Rotterdam and was active in local community projects before his recent health scare.

In previous interviews, Drenthe spoke candidly about the pressures of his early fame, reflecting on his time at Real Madrid alongside Cristiano Ronaldo and other Galácticos.

'I felt like a god at Real Madrid, playing alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, and I am proud of it,' he said. 'But I also liked to party hard in this world of glitter and glamour. I used to drink a lot even though I had to train the next day.'

He later declared bankruptcy in 2020 after admitting he had 'lost millions' on parties, holidays and cars, though he maintained he had no regrets about his football career.

Match Report

In what was his first league double since November 2024 against Cagliari, Leao proved to be the difference once again for Milan at Stadio Giuseppe Meazza.

A low-key first half saw both teams fail to threaten at either end, with Fiorentina not registering an attempt at Mike Maignan's net, but they kicked into gear shortly after the break.

Robin Gosens put the visitors into a 55th-minute lead with a sliding finish on the goal line after Luca Ranieri's header at the back post caused confusion in the Milan defence.

But Massimiliano Allegri's side restored parity eight minutes later through Leao, who sent a curling finish into the bottom-right corner from outside the penalty area.

Milan continued to turn the screw and only a brilliant point-blank save from De Gea stopped substitute Santiago Gimenez from marking his introduction with a goal.

And Milan's persistence was rewarded four minutes from time when Fabiano Parisi hauled Gimenez down inside the box, with the spot-kick awarded following a pitchside review.

Leao assumed responsibility from 12 yards and sent De Gea the wrong way as he picked out the bottom-left corner, moving the Rossoneri a point clear at the top of the table.

Real Madrid reclaimed top spot from rivals Barcelona in LaLiga as Kylian Mbappe's late goal earned them a narrow 1-0 win over nine-man Getafe on Sunday.

Match Report

Xabi Alonso's team came into the match under pressure after Ronald Araujo's stoppage-time winner for the Blaugrana temporarily sent them down to second place.

But Los Blancos responded to go two points clear at the summit, albeit in unconvincing fashion, after a sluggish performance at the Coliseum.

Despite dominating possession, Madrid lacked a cutting edge and failed to properly test David Soria until the final ten minutes of the contest after two quickfire red cards.

Allan Nyom and Alex Sancris were both sent off within seven minutes of each other, with the former dismissed just 44 seconds after coming on for an aggressive off-ball arm check on Vinicius Junior in the 76th minute.

And Madrid made their man advantage count just three minutes later when Mbappe calmly controlled Arda Guler's throughball before turning and firing past Soria.

Getafe's collapse continued as Sancris was handed a second yellow card in the 84th minute for a reckless lunge in on Vinicius, putting the result beyond Jose Bordalas' side.

Madrid almost added a second in stoppage time when Vinicius scooped a clever pass over the top for Alvaro Carreras, who flashed his shot narrowly wide.
