Court Jails 35-Year-Old Man for Burning Girlfriend to Death in South Africa

A 35-year-old South African man, Innocent Sthembiso Maseko, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his girlfriend, Mbali Lucy Ngubeni.
The couple, who lived together, reportedly began arguing in their bedroom on 20 August 2024. The dispute later escalated into a physical confrontation during which Maseko set Ngubeni on fire.
Despite sustaining severe burn injuries, Ngubeni managed to escape the room and call for help. The flames were eventually extinguished, and she was rushed to the hospital for treatment.
However, she succumbed to her injuries a week later.

President Tinubu Appoints Tunji Disu as Acting Inspector-General of Police Following Egbetokun’s Resignation

Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accepted the resignation of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, after the submission of his letter citing pressing family reasons.

In a statement issued by the President’s media aide, Bayo Onanuga, it was disclosed that the resignation was received on February 24. The President expressed deep appreciation for Egbetokun’s decades of dedicated service to the Nigeria Police Force and to the country.

Egbetokun, who was appointed in June 2023, was serving a four-year term expected to end in June 2027, in accordance with the amended provisions of the Police Act.

Considering the prevailing security challenges in the country and in line with existing laws and legal guidance, President Tinubu has approved the appointment of Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, as the Acting Inspector-General of Police with immediate effect.
