LESSON 45: UNDERSTANDING THE STARTING AIR LINE AND MANIFOLD
๐ฅ What happens after compressed air leaves the starting air receiver?
It does not go directly into the engine cylinders. It must first travel through the starting air line and manifold, an important part of the main engine starting system.
The starting air manifold receives high-pressure compressed air and distributes it toward the individual cylinder starting air valves. This allows the cylinders to receive starting air in the correct sequence so that the engine can begin rotating.
Marine engineers regularly inspect this system for:
๐ง Air leakage
๐ง Loose fl**ge connections
๐ง Cracks or corrosion
๐ง Condition of non-return and isolation valves
๐ง Moisture or oil accumulation
๐ง Abnormal pressure
Because compressed air is stored at very high pressure, problems within the starting air line can become serious safety hazards.
Regular draining, inspection, and proper maintenance help keep the starting system safe and ready whenever the main engine is required.
