The Maigari of Lokoja, HRH Dr. Ibrahim Gambo Kabir Maikarfi IV, while addressing members of the NRCS commended the efforts of the Society for their resilience and humanitarian activities targeted at the vulnerables in the society to give them hope and a sense of belonging especially when disaster strikes.

The Royal Father assured them of his support, adding his doors are wide open for any moral support to assist the Red Cross in its onerous assignment.

Addressing newsmen in Lokoja at the end of the exercise, the NRCS Branch Chairman, Benjamin Ajodo disclosed that the event was aimed at sensitizing the public on the activities of Red Cross across the globe.

According to him, the Red Cross has been involved in the alleviation of vulnerable people affected by disaster, epidemics, armed conflicts and the poorest communities in both urban and rural areas such as women, children, aged, displaced and other vulnerable people.

He stated that the 2025 World Red Cross Day theme, “On the Side of Humanity,” highlights the ongoing importance of compassion in times of crisis, noting that the Red Cross reaches out to people across high-risk zones to provide food, shelter, medical services, and other required support.

He explained that the Society requires working tools to enable it continue to initiate programs that support disaster management and the vulnerable in the society through its social outreaches and welfare programs.

Comrade Ajodo however emphasised the need for the state government and other stakeholders in the humanitarian sector to assist the Society with funds and other essential needs such as ambulance, office accomodations and vehicles to ease and make it improve in its service to the people.

“We wish to use this occasion to appeal to the State government and other stakeholders in the state for funding, Ambulances, Office Accomodations and other essentials to enhance our services.

He added that the support would definitely impact positively on the vulnerable and communities affected by disasters and other socioeconomic challenges.

We also need subvention.

While acknowledging the robust partnership between the NRCS and the State Emergency Management Agency SEMA in times of emergencies, Comrade Usman assured that the Red Cross will continue to play its role as frontiers in humanitarian support.

He stated that the 500 women comprised 220 from four communities in Lokoja, 160 from four communities in Kogi, and 120 women from three communities in Idah.

“The communities are: Galilee, Kasuwan Ruwa, Sarkin-Noma, Edo and Kanpe in Lokoja LGA; Onumaye, Edegaki, Ogbangede and Irenedu in Kogi; and Ala-Ichala, Ala-Atanegoma, and Als-Ofukpoju communities in Idah LGA.

“Our target this time around is Sanitation because when flood happens there are lots of things that will come up including health issues which is our major priority.

“The beneficiaries are mothers who are still into child bearing, who were earlier selected randomly across the communities across three local government areas,” he said.

He stressed that the EU, through its intervention project, in partnership with Red Cross, had provided relief and recovery supports to thousands of flood-affected households in many States.

Abubakar urged the beneficiaries to effectively use the items to ensure that they maintain proper menstrual hygiene and sanitation.

He advised the beneficiaries and residents of flood prone communities to adhere to the early warning signs, and relocate to upland for their own safety as the rainy season approaches.

He added: “The flood will definitely come as predicted by Nimet, so prevention is always better and safer than cure.

“We also appeal to the local community leaders to identify the highland areas ahead of time to enable them move to such areas before the community is flooded”.

The items’ distribution was carried out by Red Cross consecutively across the three local government areas

Some of the beneficiaries, Sefinat Umar from Lokoja; Farida Ibrahim from Kogi; and Victoria Ubani from Idah, who spoke to journalists in their various LGAs, commended the Red Cross and the European Union Humanitarian Aid for the gesture.

“We really appreciate the European Union and Red Cross for the gesture because they have really tried for us.

“They gave us relief items such as 20-litre jerrycans, buckets, Aqua tabs, and ATM preloaded cards with N77,000 each, in December 2024, which greatly help us to meet our immediate needs

“We are grateful to the EU and Red Cross for coming again to give us sanitary items and others. May God bless them,” Ibrahim said.

“The items distributed included: Dettol, bathing and washing soaps, reusable sanitary pads, un**es, cream, detergents, tooth paste and brush, slippers, torch light, among others.

Red Cross Distributes Dignity Kits to PWDs in Kogi

THE NIGERIAN Red Cross Society on Tuesday distributed dignity kits to one hundred and ten (110) selected Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) and vulnerable women in Kogi State.

The distribution took place at the Disability Commission Secretariat in Lokoja, and Kotonkarfe community in Kogi Council area of the state.

Speaking at the event, the Acting Secretary of Red Cross in Kogi, Abdullahi Abubakar emphasized the organization’s commitment to supporting vulnerable groups across Nigeria.

“We are here today to show our love and support to persons with disabilities. This initiative is not limited to Kogi State — it’s also taking place concurrently in five other states of Benue, Nasarawa and others..

She explained that the dignity kits are targeted at young women of reproductive age and include essential hygiene items such as bathing soap, washing soap, detergent, toothbrush, toothpaste, slippers, body cream (Vaseline), underwear, and sanitary pads.

“We call them dignity kits because they are tailored to preserve the dignity of young women. Often, PWDs are overlooked in humanitarian interventions. With this outreach, we want to reassure them that they are seen, valued, and included in Red Cross activities,” she added.

He explained that Red Cross office worked with the Disability Commission in the state; which helped them in the selection process of beneficiaries that fit into the categories of PWDs, pregnant women, and breastfeeding mothers.

Abubakar said the aim of the organization is to reach all the 21 local government areas of the state in subsequent distributions, as Lokoja and Kogi Council area was just for the pilot scheme.

Abdullahi said PWDs are among the most vulnerable, and Red Cross want to encourage them to access more support and visibility, “They are human too and deserve care, protection and inclusion.
