Patriotism remains central to rebuilding Nigeria’s moral fabric – Information Minister

The Honourable Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has identified patriotism as a key pillar to rebuilding Nigeria’s moral fabric and the attainment of national reorientation values.

The Minister made this known on Wednesday, when he received the founder of Community Peace Initiatives Network (CPIN), Ambassador Abdullahi Omaki, and his team during a courtesy visit to his office in Abuja.

“The Ministry is deeply committed to fostering national unity, promoting our core values, and ensuring that Nigerians, young and old work together to build a peaceful and prosperous country. What you are doing aligns with the government’s vision of strengthening Nigeria’s social fabric and fostering a renewed sense of hope,” the Minister said.

The Minister commended the initiatives of the ICPN to institutionalize peacebuilding and promote dialogue among Nigerians, emphasizing that patriotism, mentorship, and value orientation remain central to rebuilding the nation’s moral and social fabric.

He also highlighted the role of the National Orientation Agency (NOA) in driving national values, unity and highlighted the upcoming launch of the National Values Charter as part of the government’s effort to strengthen citizens’ commitment to ethical conduct and national development.

Ambassador Omaki, a former Executive Director of the Savannah Centre for Diplomacy and former Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs, explained that the visit to the Minister was to inform him of the formation of the National Peace and Harmony Council (NPHC) which mission is to work closely with youth groups to “close visible gaps in national unity and diversity at the grassroots level.”

The NPHC, said Ambassador Omaki, would bring together young leaders and experienced figures across various sectors to engage in policy dialogue, peacebuilding, and civic education at the grassroots. He also emphasized the need for partnership between government, civil society, and the private sector to address corruption, ethnic biases, and religious intolerance.

Your Excellency,
Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo,
Governor of Kogi State,

I sincerely appreciate your efforts since assuming the office. You have shown a leadership style that prioritizes both governance and people. Clearing ₦98.8 billion in inherited debts within a short period, approving ₦300,000 as a motivational allowance for doctors, and ensuring prompt payment of civil servants’ salaries are signs of a governor who understands the needs of his people. Pensioners receiving a ₦10,000 harmonization allowance and health insurance coverage further prove your commitment to the welfare of workers, both in and out of service.

📍 Your attention to infrastructure is another area worth commending. The rehabilitation and construction of township and rural roads across senatorial districts, coupled with projects like RAAMP and ACReSAL, are already creating new opportunities for farmers and rural dwellers. The inspection of critical projects in Lokoja such as the ultra-modern market, Treasury House, and Audit House shows a hands-on governor who follows through on promises. The introduction of the Performance Indicator Tracker app is also a step toward greater transparency and accountability in governance.

📍 While these strides are commendable, there remains an issue that touches the heart of justice and fairness, i.e GRATUITY PAYMENTS. For donkey years, retirees who dedicated their youth and strength to serving Kogi State have been left without their entitlements. Many live in pain, undervalued, some are d£ad, and abandoned at a stage when they deserve rest and dignity. This neglect has made gratuity a stain on the reputation of successive administrations in Kogi State.

📍 Your Excellency, retirees are looking up to you with trust and renewed hope. The same way you cleared inherited debts and ensured prompt salaries, they believe you can put an end to this painful cycle. Creating a sustainable plan to offset gratuity arrears will not only restore the dignity of those who served but will also be remembered as one of your greatest legacies. This is an opportunity to correct a long-standing injustice and set a new standard for governance in Kogi State.

📍 I respectfully appeal that you give this matter the urgent attention it deserves. Your administration has already proven that positive change is possible in Kogi State. Addressing the gratuity backlog will seal your place as a people’s governor, one who not only built roads and markets but also restored hope and dignity to those who gave their lives in service to the state.

📍 Thank you for your attention to this matter.
