Zulum congratulates Borno NUJ’s New Exco
.. Lauds peaceful conduct

Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has congratulated newly elected executives of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, in Borno State.

The executives were elected on Saturday at the council’s triennial delegates conference, which took place at the Musa Usman Secretariat in Maiduguri.

Zulum’s congratulatory message was contained in a statement issued on Sunday by his spokesperson, Malam Isa Gusau.

The Governor specifically congratulated the new chairman of the NUJ in Borno State, Comrade Dauda Iliya of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, FRCN.

Zulum also congratulated AbdulKareem Haruna, publisher of Humanitarian Times who was elected Vice Chairman as well as Ali Chiroma of Peace FM, Maiduguri, elected Secretary of the Council.

The Governor commended the outgoing chairman, Babagana Bukar for his display of maturity in conceding defeat and for leading the council to the conduct of a free and fair election.

He also commended Mr Timothy Butu and Mrs Fatima Mustapha both of the Borno State Ministry of Information Chapel for their sportsmanship in the respective contests for offices of Vice Chairman and Secretary.

Zulum congratulated other executives elected unopposed, who included Hauwa Bata of Peace FM- Treasurer, Iya Maaji of NTA- Assistant Secretary, Babagana Ali of Borno Radio and Television, BRTV- Financial Secretary and Babagana Liman of the Borno state Ministry of Information Chapel- Auditor.

Governor Zulum specially praised journalists in Borno State for the very high standard they were able to set by holding very peaceful and issue-based campaigns with climax being a qualitative election that should be learned from the NUJ.

Zulum commended visiting officials from the northeast zonal headquarters of the NUJ who supervised the election.

The Governor directed his media aides to accord maximum support to the incoming state executives of the NUJ particularly on sustaining the existing atmosphere in which journalists freely and independently operate, and on ensuring access to information, in addition to matters of journalists’ welfare, training and retraining as may be required by the NUJ, should they seek Government’s support.

The statement recalled that in the build up to the election, Governor Zulum had played fatherly role by supporting the NUJ with funds for the election and by refusing to endorse any of the contestants, rather, the Governor declared all aspirants and their supporters as his own, without preference.

Meanwhile, Governor Zulum, the statement added, has directed his media aides to ensure the actualization of an election coverage training with certificates of participation for 100 journalists under the Borno NUJ, through a collaboration between the press unit of the Government House in Maiduguri and the Department of Mass Communication at the University of Maiduguri.

New York: Zulum Addresses Multinational Groups on Girls’ Education

Borno state Governor, Professor Engr Babagana Umara Zulum has addressed multinational groups in New York, United States of America, towards increasing focus on the education of girls in Nigeria and around the world.

The Governor traveled to the US as part of President Muhammadu Buhari’s delegation to the 77th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA77) held at the UN headquarters in New York City.

Aside his participation at the UNGA, Zulum was invited as a special guest speaker at a programme, tagged ‘Rewrite the Future’ which was held last Wednesday, to call attention towards increased investment on girls’ education around the world.

The event was organized by a non-governmental organisation, ‘One Million Teachers- ‘1MT Cares’ in collaboration with two other NGOs: ‘Girl Rising’ and the ‘North East Children’s Trust’.

Governor Zulum made a presentation titled, 'Investing in Girls' Education in Nigeria, with a focus on Borno State.

He noted that to augment gaps in girl child education, the federal government in collaboration with states, introduced a programme Better Education Service Delivery (BESDA) and Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) Project, targeted at educating girls of school-age.

The Governor said the programmes are vehicles for increasing the enrollment of the girl-child into schools.

"In the northern part of Borno State, a deficit of girl child education is overwhelming. We need more teachers, more training of teachers, laboratory equipment etcetera to enable our children to have better education" Zulum said.

The Governor said the state’s educational system was worsened by over 12 years of the Boko Haram insurgency which was now on decline.

He said aside deaths of over 100,000 persons and displacement of about two million, the insurgents targeted many schools.

Zulum cited that over 5,000 school buildings were destroyed by Boko Haram.

He said out of 1, 357 primary schools across Borno State, 512 primary schools, dozens of secondary schools and some tertiary institutions were destroyed.

These attacks made many schools to close down and also brought down number of teachers.

“Over 530 teachers were killed, many pupils and students were displaced or possibly abducted and conscripted into Boko Haram as spies or young fighters while some were killed” he noted.

He noted the Chibok abduction and forced marriage of some of the students as a reference point.

The Governor said there are many out of school children particularly amongst 52, 293 orphans whose parents were killed by insurgents.

Zulum noted that these are official figures as non-official figures might be more.

He lamented that because of the peculiarity of the problems, meagre resources of the state, which were hitherto budgeted for education before 2009, were then channeled to security and upkeep of IDPs within and outside the state.

On the way forward, the Governor said Borno has established an Education Trust Fund to augment funding, recruited over 1,000 Teachers, built 21 mega schools and rehabilitated dozens of existing schools and also provided mobile laboratories for physics, chemistry and biology in secondary schools.

"We have been providing free uniforms, we train school managers and we decided to provide a feeding system to our primary school pupils through support from federal government under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari and our able Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo to attract pupils" Zulum said, adding that the state Government was paying examination fees to support parents.

The event at which Zulum spoke was moderated by Chika Oduah a Journalist, poet, writer, documentary film maker, photographer and correspondent for VICE news.

Beside Zulum, there were other speakers at the event who included Christina Lowery- CEO Girl Rising, Hakeem Subair- Founder and CEO, 1 Million Teachers, Dr. Mariam Masha- Executive Secretary, North East Children's trust and Kristine Robinson- President of the Queen's University Alumni, New York branch.
