Gombe

You sit at northeast
With your eyes closed
Waiting for me
To come back home.
You are a mystery
That I must cross
This narrow sea at dawn
Just to worship the stars
That you carry in your eyes.
I miss the nose jewellery
That adorns your nose.
I, never, never knew
The magnificent beads
Around your fine waist
Could say a prayer
For me, too.
My Jewel, your skin colour
Says the weather is lovely
& lucious, but your face
Says you miss me, your tiger.
You do not worry
No more, I am skirting
The seven seas
To make you smile
Like I used to. My jewel,
Cuddle your heart,
I am coming home
To kindle another fire
Of desire once more.

The Weaver Bird

The weaver bird built in our house
And laid its eggs on our only tree.
We did not want to send it away.
We watched the building of the nest
And supervised the egg-laying.
And the weaver returned in the guise of the owner.
Preaching salvation to us that owned the house.
They say it came from the west
Where the storms at sea had felled the gulls
And the fishers dried their nets by lantern light.
Its sermon is the divination of ourselves
And our new horizon limits at its nest.
But we cannot join the prayers and answers of the communicants.
We look for new homes every day,
For new altars we strive to rebuild
The old shrines defiled by the weaver's excrement.

Aisha

I sat alone here staring
At your picture on my desk
Your image in the picture
Was perfect like the daughter of Zion

I can't swallow your thought
I can't deny my mind the feelings
I can't wait to see you smile again

Take a night bus to Ahoada East
Ignore the lock down 'cause
This is Nigeria
For twenty naira will bail your bus
At each garrison on the way

The rain is much, come and warm me
I want to feel your breath close to mine
For I will tell you tales of love with my fingers
Traveling across the beauty which you carry

Don't keep my bed waiting
For the weather is cool
and full of seduction

Hope is a Thing with Feathers

Loving you is what I do
Not have control over.
It is what I do
For a living.

I wear it on my head
Like Jack's golden crown.
I put it on me
Like Christmas clothes.

If you don't turn
My light down low,
I will cross the seven
Seas just to buy you

A diamond necklace,
& a golden nose ring too.
Talk to me star,
Let me hear your melody.

Today, I paint you
To say you are a star.
My captain looks up to you
To navigate the sea of love.

I do know we belong
Together like cactus & desert.
Let me walk you
Down the aisle of love.

If my love and affection
Is not lovely & temperate
When the room's lights
Are turned down low,

Teach me how to trade
My gold to say a prayer
With the rosary
You carry around your waist.

Just Call Me Whenever You Are Lonely

Today even the sun
Lingers a little longer
On the roofs
Of waiting homes.

The morning has dressed
Itself in white, and the breeze
Has remembered every prayer
We almost forgot to finish.

I will not count
How many roads remain.
The road does not end
Like Sundays, birthdays & you.

The birds are rehearsing
Their oldest hymns
On your cheek & the trees
Are applauding with green hands.

The North has opened
Its windows for you.
The dust has settled
Like a tired pilgrim finding shade.

There is fresh light
Cooling the earth.
There is laughter
Hidden inside the bells,

And hope wearing
The fragrance
Of new beginnings.
Bring your silence.

Sunday knows
How to translate
It into peace.
Bring your weary feet.

To the One Who Waits

I am coming,
Not because the road
Is easy, but because
Your words have become
Lanterns along my path.

The wind found me
Long before your letter did.
It whispered your name
Into my restless nights.

I have carried silence
Like a basket on my head,
Balancing hope
Through dust and distance.

If the North remembers me,
It is because your heart
Never let me go
Down slowly.

Keep the stars awake.
Tell the sky
I am only a few
Dreams away.

Do not gather riches.
I have learned
That love arrives
Empty-handed and leaves us full.

When I reach you,
Let there be no sermons.
Only your quiet hands,
my weary smile,

And two hearts
Speaking the language
The journey has been
Teaching all along.

To the One Who Travels North

Aisha, I will be here,
Where the wind
Remembers your name.

The road is long,
But every mile
Is teaching our hearts
The same language.

Come gently.
The North has been waiting
With open skies
And patient stars.

If heaven has answered you,
Then let gratitude
Be the song we carry
Into my arms tonight.

I will meet you
Not with riches,
But with words,
With quiet hands,

And a heart
ready to call
You home,
My young stag.
