NUJ FCT Mourns Slain Member, Sunday Olatuyi, Demands Justice and Prosecution of Reckless Driver
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, has received with profound shock and deep sorrow the tragic and untimely death of one of its dedicated members, Mr. Sunday Olatuyi, who was fatally knocked down by a Toyota Corolla with registration number ABUJA RBC 128 AM at Lugbe Bus Stop, Abuja.
The fatal incident occurred on Saturday night, December 20, 2025, while the deceased was returning home after work. Mr. Olatuyi was reportedly in the company of a friend when a reckless driver struck him at the bus stop, leading to his unfortunate death.
Mr. Olatuyi, aged 40, hailed from Odo-Oro Ekiti in Ikole Local Government Area of Ekiti State. He is survived by his wife, a seven-month-old daughter, Eniola, and his aged mother.
Until his passing, the late Olatuyi was a Senior Cameraman with Advocate Broadcasting Network (ADBN Television). He had previously served with Ben TV and was widely respected for his professionalism, dedication to duty, and unwavering commitment to the journalism profession and union activities.
His death is a devastating blow to the NUJ FCT family and the media community at large. He was a committed union man whose passion for the ideals of journalism and active participation in union affairs will be sorely missed. His absence leaves a void that will be difficult to fill.
The NUJ FCT Council strongly condemns the reckless act that led to this tragic loss and expresses deep concern over the increasing cases of dangerous driving and blatant disregard for human lives on roads within the Federal Capital Territory.
In view of this painful development, the Council demands an immediate, thorough, and transparent investigation into the incident and calls on the Nigeria Police Force to ensure the prompt prosecution of the driver involved in accordance with the law. Justice must be done and must be seen to be done, to serve as a strong deterrent against reckless driving.
The NUJ FCT Council extends its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, the management and staff of ADBN Television, the Correspondents’ Chapel, the Society of Practicing Cameramen, as well as friends, colleagues, and associates of the late Mr. Sunday Olatuyi.
The Council assures the family of its unwavering solidarity and support during this difficult time and pledges to closely monitor the case until justice is fully served.
May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace. Amen.

Breaking News:
Tinubu Picks Ex-CDS Christopher Musa as New Defence Minister

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has nominated former Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Gwabin Musa, as Nigeria’s new Minister of Defence — a strategic choice coming barely 24 hours after the resignation of Mohammed Badaru.

The President announced his nomination in a formal letter to Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Tuesday, expressing strong confidence in Gen. Musa’s capacity to reinforce Nigeria’s security architecture.

Gen. Musa, who turns 58 on December 25, is a highly decorated military officer known for his leadership in major counterterrorism operations. He served as CDS from 2023 until October 2025 and won the prestigious Colin Powell Award for Soldiering in 2012.

Born in Sokoto in 1967, Musa began his education there before proceeding to the College of Advanced Studies, Zaria. He enrolled in the Nigerian Defence Academy in 1986, emerging with a B.Sc. degree and commissioning as a Second Lieutenant in 1991.

Over the course of his distinguished career, Gen. Musa has held several critical command and staff positions, including:

Commanding Officer, 73 Battalion

General Staff Officer 1, Training/Operations, HQ 81 Division

Assistant Director, Operational Requirements, Army Policy & Plans

Commander, Sector 3, Operation Lafiya Dole and Multinational Joint Task Force

Theatre Commander, Operation Hadin Kai

Commander, Nigerian Army Infantry Corps

His leadership in the Lake Chad region and in the fight against insurgency earned him national and international recognition.

If confirmed by the Senate, Gen. Musa will assume responsibility for steering Nigeria’s Defence Ministry at a critical time.

BREAKING: Defence Minister Badaru Resigns Amid Serious Health Concerns

Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has officially stepped down from his position, citing worsening health conditions that have hindered his ability to continue in office.

The announcement was made on Monday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who confirmed that Badaru submitted a formal resignation letter to President Bola Tinubu.

In the letter, Badaru explained that his declining health made it necessary for him to relinquish his duties. President Tinubu has accepted the resignation, thanking the former minister for his service and acknowledging his efforts in strengthening the nation’s security architecture.

Badaru’s departure marks a significant shake-up within the defence sector, coming at a time when Nigeria continues to confront multiple security challenges across the country.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has recorded another major breakthrough in its relentless war against drug trafficking, intercepting multiple consignments of illicit substances and arresting dozens of suspects, including high-profile individuals across several states.

At the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja Lagos, NDLEA operatives uncovered 70 parcels of co***ne expertly concealed inside the walls of cocoa butter cream containers destined for London, United Kingdom. The 3.60 kilograms of the drug were seized on October 14, 2025, during cargo checks on an Air Peace flight labeled as personal effects.

A cargo agent, Lawal Mustapha Olakunle, who presented the package, was immediately arrested. Follow-up investigations led to the arrest of Ogunmuyide Taiwo Deborah, a healthcare worker, and Mutiu Adebayo Adebiyi, CEO of Mutiu Adebiyi & Co Travels, at his Ikeja GRA office on October 20.

In another operation, NDLEA officers at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport (AIIA), Enugu, intercepted 103.59 grams of methamphetamine concealed in a “Diabeta Herbs Coffee Tea” pack. The suspect, a 35-year-old Lesotho national Lemena Mark, was attempting to export the drug to the Philippines before his arrest on October 22.

The agency also arrested Umar Abubakar, 40, in Kwara State, after recovering 21,950 capsules of tramadol hidden inside a 100-litre water heater along the Bode Saadu axis.

In a dramatic Lagos operation, NDLEA stormed Proxy Nightclub, Victoria Island, in the early hours of Sunday, October 26, disrupting a full-blown drug party. Over 100 partygoers were arrested, including the club owner Mike Eze Nwalie Nwogu, popularly known as Pretty Mike.
Recovered items included cartons of Loud (high-grade cannabis) and laughing gas from both the suspects and the club’s store. Operatives had infiltrated the party from 11 p.m. Saturday before executing the raid at 3 a.m. Sunday based on actionable intelligence.

Elsewhere, two suspects — Auwal Musa (26) and Salihu Bala (22) — were caught at Dan-Anacha checkpoint, Taraba State, with 450,000 pills of tramadol and Exol-5 hidden in a truck loaded with building materials en route to Mubi, Adamawa State.

In Kogi State, officers seized 162.2 kilograms of skunk (a potent strain of cannabis) from a truck along the Okene–Lokoja highway, while another 128 kilograms were recovered from a suspect, Abubakar Muhammad, 55, in Keffi, Nasarawa State.

A female drug distributor, Oyonumoh Glory Effiong, described as a major supplier of Canadian and California Loud in Lekki, Ikoyi, Ajah, Victoria Island, and VGC, was arrested on October 17. NDLEA recovered 500 grams of the illicit substances during a raid on her Lekki residence.

In Ikorodu, officers raided the home of Ogunyabo Adenigbigbe, where 275 litres of “skuchies” — a dangerous cocktail made from black currant drink, cannabis, and opioids — were seized.

In Abia State, a 75-year-old grandfather, Echendu Onuoka, was arrested at O**m village, Obingwa LGA, with 4.7 kilograms of skunk, while a 60-year-old grandmother, Aukana John, was caught with 225 grams of the same drug in the same area.

Similar raids across Ondo, Kaduna, Lagos, and Zamfara yielded massive seizures:

150kg of skunk recovered in Ikun Akoko, Ondo.

234.5kg of cannabis seized from two suspects in Saminaka, Kaduna.

55kg of skunk found at Ashipa, Badagry.

121.3 litres of skuchies seized at Itoga, Badagry.

In Zamfara, Abubakar Ibrahim, 30, was nabbed along the Gummi–Anka road with an AK-47 rifle and 1,746 rounds of ammunition en route to a forest in Anka LGA.

Meanwhile, NDLEA’s War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) campaign continues nationwide, with sensitization programs held in schools, churches, mosques, and workplaces across states including Oyo, Kebbi, Enugu, Benue, Taraba, Rivers, and Kano.

Commending his officers, NDLEA Chairman/Chief Executive Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd) hailed their commitment and urged them to sustain the momentum through a balanced approach of enforcement and drug education.

Nigeria, Qatar Deepen Ties to Combat Drug Trafficking — Marwa Seeks Support for Rehab Centres

Abuja, October 7, 2025 — Nigeria and the State of Qatar have taken a major step toward strengthening their partnership in the global fight against drug trafficking and substance abuse. The two nations sealed this renewed commitment with the symbolic exchange of instruments of ratification between the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), and the Qatari Ambassador to Nigeria, Ali Bin Ghanem Al-Hajri.

The exchange ceremony, held at the Qatar Embassy in Abuja, follows the historic signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, on March 3, 2024, in Doha. The MoU centers on joint efforts to combat the illicit trade in narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances, and their precursors.

Marwa: “Together, We Will Protect Our Nations”

Speaking at the event, Gen. Marwa lauded the growing partnership, describing it as a powerful alliance against a shared global threat.

> “This cooperation represents our collective determination to protect our people and countries from the dangers of substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking,” Marwa said.

He revealed that within the past four years, the NDLEA had intercepted over 1,000 kilograms of co***ne, he**in, methamphetamine, cannabis, and other hard drugs en route to Qatar, a testament to Nigeria’s intensified border control and intelligence operations.

Marwa also praised Qatar’s peacebuilding efforts and global humanitarian interventions through the Qatar Foundation, urging the Gulf nation to extend its support to Nigeria in a new dimension—the establishment of rehabilitation facilities for victims of drug abuse.

> “The provision of rehabilitation centres will not only help treat those battling addiction but also reintegrate them into society as productive citizens,” he noted.

Qatar Envoy Pledges Continued Support

In his remarks, Ambassador Ali Bin Ghanem Al-Hajri commended the NDLEA’s dedication and assured that he would present Marwa’s rehabilitation proposal to the Qatar Foundation for consideration.

The ambassador described the Nigeria–Qatar relationship as one that has deepened significantly in recent years, noting the surge in economic cooperation, diplomatic engagements, and increased travel and exchanges between the two nations.

> “Our partnership has continued to grow in strength and purpose. We look forward to even greater collaboration in our shared quest for peace, health, and prosperity,” the envoy said.

A New Chapter in Bilateral Cooperation

The Nigeria–Qatar partnership marks a new era of coordinated global response to drug trafficking—an issue that has destabilized communities and fueled criminal networks worldwide. With this renewed commitment, both nations aim to combine intelligence sharing, law enforcement cooperation, and humanitarian support to address the problem from both enforcement and rehabilitation fronts.

As the NDLEA intensifies its nationwide campaign against drug abuse, the collaboration with Qatar is expected to further boost Nigeria’s capacity to combat cross-border drug crimes and strengthen its ongoing efforts in public health and youth rehabilitation.
