BLOCKING OF PETER OBI IN BENUE IS A SAD DAY FOR DEMOCRACY

The reported blocking of the convoy of the NDC presidential candidate, Peter Obi, from proceeding into parts of Benue State is deeply disturbing and deserves condemnation by every Nigerian who believes in democracy, freedom, and political tolerance.

Benue State belongs to all Nigerians. No individual, political party, group of youths, or political interest has the right to decide who is permitted to enter the state or visit its people.

Peter Obi reportedly came to Benue to sympathize with communities affected by insecurity and the tragic loss of lives. Whether one supports Peter Obi politically or not should not even be the issue. In a democracy, political differences must never become an excuse for intimidation, harassment, violence, or the restriction of a citizen’s freedom of movement.

Nigeria is bigger than politics.

We cannot continue to preach democracy while tolerating political intolerance. We cannot claim to be one united nation while preventing Nigerians from freely visiting other parts of their own country. Political leaders and their supporters must understand that power is temporary, but the consequences of destroying democratic values can last for generations.

The youths of Benue, and indeed Nigeria, must also refuse to be used as instruments of political intimidation. Our young people deserve employment, education, security, and opportunities—not manipulation for political purposes.

If we disagree with Peter Obi, let us challenge his ideas. If we support another candidate, let us campaign peacefully. But blocking, threatening, or intimidating political opponents is not democracy—it is political rascality.

The relevant security agencies should investigate the incident and ensure that no Nigerian is unlawfully prevented from moving freely or carrying out legitimate activities anywhere in the country.

Benue belongs to Nigerians. Nigeria belongs to all of us.

We must reject political violence.
We must reject intimidation.
We must reject the weaponization of youths for political purposes.

Democracy can only survive where there is tolerance, freedom, and respect for the rights of others.
