DEMOCRACY DAY: Gov. Alia Hails National Assembly on State Police Bill.

Friday, June 12 2026

Governor Hyacinth Alia has praised the House of Representatives for passing a bill to pave the way for the creation of state police.

He said the passage of the State is a bold and commendable step towards strengthening Nigeria's security architecture.

The Governor stated this earlier today during his broadcast to the people of Benue state on the 2026 Democracy Day.

Explaining his support for the bill, the Governor said that the bill recognizes the need for a more localized and responsive policing system capable of addressing the peculiar security challenges facing different states and communities across the country.

"The lawmakers deserve appreciation for demonstrating courage, foresight, and commitment to the protection of lives and property.

"I urge Nigerians to view this development in good faith and as a necessary reform aimed at enhancing public safety and deepening grassroots security.

"With appropriate safeguards, accountability mechanisms, and constitutional checks, state police can complement existing security agencies, improve intelligence gathering, and promote quicker responses to threats.

"This is a significant milestone in our collective quest for a safer and more secure Nigeria".

The Governor pointed out that his administration has made sincere efforts to secure the state, by strengthening security through collaboration with security agencies, provision of over 150 operational vehicles and 600 motorcycles, establishment of the Benue State Civil Protection Guards, and the Anyam Nyor Joint Task Force.

He explained further that the efforts improved security and facilitated the gradual return of peace to several parts of the state.

A VEHEMENT REFUTAL BY THE LEADERSHIP OF THE NIGERIAN UNION OF PENSIONERS BENUE STATE COUNCIL OVER THE RECENT PROTEST BY A STRANGE PERCIEVED SPONSORED GROUP

The Nigeria Union of Pensioners ( NUP) Benue State Council under the leadership of Comr Michael Vembe, wishes to refute the claims by a group that calls itself " Concerned Pensioners" which did a kangaroo and illegal protest in Makurdi yesterday claiming it is regretting the decision to purchase nomination form for Governor Hyacinth Alia.

A statement by the State Chairman of the NUP, Comrade Michael Vembe has categorically stated that the group was not part of the decision to purchase nomination form for Governor Hyacinth Alia. Adding that the perceived sponsored acclaimed group of pensioners rejected the decision to purchase a nomination form for the Governor and made their objection in print and electronic media, so, how can they be regretting what they did not do?

Comrade Michael Vembe has therefore denounced the group saying that the group is an illegal group and called on security agencies to deal with them as illegal.

Vembe has called on Pensioners in the State to disregard the antics of that illegal group and remain calm as the NUP is negotiating with the State Government about unpaid inherited arrears and Government has initiated the process for payment which will soon be implemented.

He pledged a sustained unalloyed loyalty and full support for the re-election bid of Governor Hyacinth Alia, in the 2027 general elections.

DEMOCRACY DAY MESSAGE TO THE GOOD PEOPLE OF JECHIRA AND BENUE STATE.

Today, as Nigeria marks Democracy Day, I join millions of our compatriots in celebrating the resilience of our democracy and honouring the sacrifices of those who fought for the democratic freedoms we enjoy today.

I congratulate His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for his steadfast commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and advancing the Renewed Hope Agenda for a greater Nigeria. His leadership continues to reinforce the ideals of constitutional governance, the rule of law, and people-centered development.

I also specially commend the Executive Governor of Benue State, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, for deepening democratic governance in our dear state. Governor Alia has demonstrated uncommon commitment to allowing democracy take its rightful course by promoting inclusiveness, fairness, accountability, and respect for the wishes of the people.

As one of the direct beneficiaries of this democratic process, I can confidently attest to Governor Alia's dedication to internal democracy. Today, I stand as the APC Flag bearer for Jechira Federal Constituency in the 2027 General Elections because party members and the people were given the opportunity to freely choose their preferred candidates through a transparent and fair direct primary election process. Indeed, what can be more democratic than allowing the people to decide who represents them?

I sincerely appreciate the good people of Jechira Federal Constituency for the overwhelming support, trust, and cooperation they have continued to give the administration of Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia. Your belief in his leadership has contributed immensely to the progress and stability we are witnessing across our state.

As we celebrate this year's Democracy Day, let us remain committed to peace, unity, tolerance, and active participation in governance.

Together, we can continue to build a stronger Jechira, a prosperous Benue State, and a greater Nigeria.
Happy Democracy Day to all the good people of Jechira, Benue State and Nigerians at large.

Signed:

Dr. Livinus Adzer Tsar

"You Should Have Done Your Homework Well"

โ€” Akpabio Tells National Assembly Members Who Lost Primaries

The President of the Nigerian Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has advised members of the National Assembly who lost their party primary elections to accept the outcome and reflect on their political strategies rather than seek shortcuts back onto the ballot.

Speaking in Abuja on Wednesday, Akpabio addressed growing speculation that he was mounting pressure on the National Working Committee of All Progressives Congress (APC) to replace the names of candidates who legitimately won the party's primaries with those of serving National Assembly members who were defeated during the exercise.

The Senate President dismissed the claims, stressing that he neither possesses the authority nor intends to interfere with the party's nomination process.

He acknowledged the desperation among some of his colleagues who failed to secure their party tickets, suggesting that the defeats may have left many of them with "high blood pressure."

He urged the party leadership to accommodate such members, possibly in various campaign structures and activities ahead of the general elections.

Akpabio further explained that the APC's candidate selection process remains the responsibility of the party and that the National Assembly has no role in altering the outcome of duly conducted primaries.

According to him, whoever emerges as the party's candidate through the established process will ultimately receive the support and recognition due to elected representatives.

His remarks are expected to calm concerns in some quarters that successful primary candidates could be substituted in favour of incumbent lawmakers who lost their bids for re-election.

The development is also seen as a boost for internal party democracy and accountability, reinforcing the principle that elected officials must remain connected to the electorate and earn their mandates through popular support rather than reliance on perceived political influence or backdoor arrangements.
