A CONCISE DESCRIPTION OF AMORJI VILLAGE, MGBIDI, AWGU LGA, ENUGU STATE, NIGERIA
Amorji village is one of the 14 villages of Mgbidi town, Awgu local government area of Enugu state, south east of the Nigeria. It is located on latitude 6⁰ 4’ 29’’N and longitude 7° 27' 11" E.
Over the years, Amorji village has evolved from stone to modern ages. It was formerly known as Enwuru-oku, which later was re-named as Oko-ofia and as civilization evolved it was finally re-named as Amorji due to the fact that the village was surrounded by thick forest and great trees (Iroko trees precisely), this pave way for the coinage of ‘Amorji’ from ‘Ama-orji’. She has a boundary with Ogba village at the eastern flank, on the western flank, Amorji has boundary with Ezere Town, at the northern side, she has boundary with Nenwe-nta town and toward the south, she has boundary with Ezi-ama village. Amorji is surrounded by mountains on all sides. Within the village, there is a unique east-to-west ever flowing stream known as Mmu-amu which flows downward to Ezere town. The village is subdivided into two major settlements: the upper (Amorji kugwu) and lower (Amorji kagbor).

Other smaller streams in the village include Obuba, Iyi-ojo, Iyi-uta and Ukwu-akwa. It is important mention that these streams are ever flowing and they serve as main sources of water for the village dwellers.

In terms of natural landscapes, the unique geological formations, sculpted by the forces of nature over time, have given rise to the distinctive rocky valleys and ravine landscapes of Amorji. Additionally, the village maintains a pristine ecological appearance, characterized by lush ancient trees, abundant greenery, and an absence of industrial zones.

There is zero air pollution, resulting in a landscape of green mountains and clear waters, with green space coverage.

Amorji has abundant natural resources such as gravels, stones, hydro-carbon, potash and other minerals. Amorji village can be turned into a tourism centre in Enugu state with a little effort from the government as a result of naturally built cave, ever-flowing fountain of spring water, nature built through and crest mountainous structures and evergreen vegetation.
Historically Amorji is the king-maker in Mgbidi town. She stands tall within the committee of villages in Mgbidi town being knows as ‘Okpara of Uwee’. Amorji dwellers are industrious and loving people.

Their major occupation includes farming, animal husbandry and palm-wine tapping. She prides herself of being able to feed the whole of Mgbidi town if her agricultural system is well harnessed due to the availability of abundant and fertile land. Both food and cash crops are well grown in Amorji. Prominent among the food crops are: plantain, banana, yam, cocoyam, vegetable, and local beans.
Furthermore, oil bean seed (akpakana or ukpaka), pineapple, Cashew, oil-palm produce, various types of pears, bread-fruit (ukwa) are among the prominent cash crops grown in Amorji.

In the recent time, as a result of civilization, migration from rural area to urban areas have equally been witness by her dweller. This paradigm shift has cause ecological and demographical imbalance as seen in recent time.

Our dishes are very rich and comes in varieties, especially when enjoyed with fresh palm wine.
This is why a holiday in the village once in a year is always the prayer of anyone who has had a taste.

Do well to book an appointment to visit Amorji village to justify the saying that ‘seeing is believing’.

Oriri Njoku-Oha in Mgbidi

used to ba a big festival in Mgbidi town of Enugu state. This festival used to be celebrated every four years with a very powerful ritual sacrifice which is performed every year that precedes the festival (is called Igba aja Nkoju-oha). This ritual is compulsory and hallowed. Njoku itself was believed to be the god of very food that being plated during those days. (It was Njoku Ji and Njoku Ede etc)

Oriri Njoku Oha originated from a family of a man called Uzoechi Eneka who hailed from a clan (village) called Ugwu-oge. Only this family of Uzoechi Eneka reserved the right to perform the ritual sacrifices of Njoku-oha.
Ugwu-oge is a clan that lived between Enugu-agu Ogba and Isuga village and has gone into extinction. They also bordered another clan called Ama-okpu, this clan Ama-opku have also gone into extinction, they bordered Isiyi Amokwe.

Then Uzoechi Eneka, the man from Ugwu-oge had 3 daughters, the first daughter was married at Umu-agu, second daughter married at Eziama and last one was married at Enugu-agu Ogba,
Before the man Uzoechi Eneka died, he passed on to his first daughter who married at Umu agu the right to continue to execute the Njoku-oha ritual, also instructed her to always contact her younger sister at Eziama and his friend at Ogba who were taking very good care of him during that his old age, His name was called Enukwu Udu. He instructed that 3 of them should jointly perform the ritual of Njoku Oha and eat everything that comes of it together. He then sorted his last daughter with all their landed property since she lives around.

Consequently, the Njoku-Oha ritual performance was moved from Ugwu-oge to Umu-agu after he died. The sacrificial ram will be taken from Umu-agu to Eziama arrive. The ram will be slaughtered at Eziama, the blood sprinkled along road parts, and they will move to the home of Enukwu Udu which is in the present days known as Umu-Enukwu at Ogba-Etiti, Ogba village and the blood of the ram sprinkled in same way at Ogba then they move back to Umu-agu to conclude the ritual.
During this ritual, any woman the indulges in adultery does not cross the blood of the ram or goes close to Umu-agu during the ritual period, the same as any man has committed in**st. They cannot also get in contact with the blood of the sacrificial ram or else they will die.

Furthermore, one year after this ritual Njoku festival will take place. During all newly married men will visit their in-laws with a gift of Nkpiripki ezi (half part of a pig) He either buy half part of ezi (pig) or kill one if he has piggery farm. This is the greatest part of the celebration.
Njoku Oha festival was like a contemporary days Christmas where all indigenes of Mgbidi massively returned from far and near to feast together.
The sound of masquerading and our traditional drumming (Abia) will be heard from every conners of Mgbidi town with friends from neighboring town all invited to feast with their friends.

Oriri Njoku-oha used to be joyously and heavily celebrated in Mgbidi.

Finally, after days of Njoku-oha celebration, every matured man from every family will get a c**k and two tubers of yam and proceed to the most elderly of the family’s house for more family get together and further sacrifices for the Njoku Ji and Ede. They will slaughter all the c**ks inside barn with all blood poured in a single calabash located that barn and only a sacred woman (no adulterous lifestyle) is permitted or allowed to do the cooking. This exercise is called iba na oba ji (entering the barn) If any adulterous woman cooks the food of this very ritual exercise she will not live.
