REJOINDER: EDUCATION IN NIGER STATE: A CALL FOR ACCURATE UNDERSTANDING AND APPRECIATION

We would like to express our appreciation to Mai Gemu for bringing attention of the Honourable Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Dr. Hadiza Asabe Mohammed and the Amiable State NUT Chairman, Comrade Adamu Mohammed Akayago, to the importance of practical application in education in his open letter titled "MAKING OR MARRING EDUCATION IN NIGER STATE." We commend his effort in advocating for the right approach to education in order to achieve success.

However, we would like to address some false claims made in the open letter regarding the Commissioner of Education and the NUT Chairman. It is essential to have accurate information and avoid misconceptions, especially when discussing matters of importance such as education.

Firstly, we want to clarify that both the Commissioner of Education and the NUT Chairman in Niger State have been actively working towards the enhancement of the education system in the state. They have shown dedication and commitment to ensuring that students and teachers have the necessary resources and support for effective teaching and learning.

The Commissioner of Education has been proactive in implementing policies and programs aimed at improving the quality of education in the State. As a result, the Ministry is committed to infrastructural development, teacher training, and curriculum enhancement.

Similarly, the NUT Chairman, Comrade Akayago has been instrumental in advocating for the welfare and professional growth of teachers in the state. Through various initiatives, the NUT Chairman has worked tirelessly to address the challenges faced by teachers. This includes advocating for better working conditions, infrastructural development, improved remuneration, and continuous professional development opportunities.

Therefore, any claims suggesting that the efforts of these esteemed individuals are falling short or hindering the progress of education in Niger State are entirely false and misleading. It is crucial to acknowledge their contributions and support their ongoing endeavors, as they are committed to playing a vital role in shaping the future of education in the state.

Additionally, we would like to clarify that during the interaction between the Honorable Commissioner and the Head teachers, no insults of any kind were directed towards the teachers. The assertion of insults made in the open letter is entirely false and misleading. It is important to ensure accurate information is conveyed and to refrain from spreading unfounded claims that can harm the reputation of individuals involved in the education sector. The focus should be on constructive dialogue and collaboration to address the challenges and promote the advancement of education in Niger State.

In conclusion, while we appreciate Mai Gemu's advocacy for a practical approach to education in Niger State, we kindly request a more accurate understanding and depiction of the continued efforts been made by the State Government through the Ministry for Basic and Secondary Education and the NUT Chairman in shaping the future of education in the state. It is by recognizing and supporting their efforts/work that we can continue to strive for excellence and progress in the education sector.

COMRADE ADAMU AKAYAGO: A LEADER'S LEGACY IN THE NIGERIAN UNION OF TEACHERS, NIGER STATE

Comrade Adamu Akayago has undoubtedly left an indelible mark on the stewardship of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) Niger State wing. As the State Chairman, his achievements have been commendable, showcasing his exceptional leadership qualities and unwavering commitment to the betterment of teachers and education in the state.

From the onset, Comrade Akayago proved to be a true mediator, administrator, teacher, and leader par excellence. He embarked on a journey that would unite both primary and secondary school teachers under his leadership, fostering a harmonious working environment. This achievement is significant as it promotes collaboration and synergy among educators, leading to enhanced educational outcomes for the students.

One notable attribute of Comrade Akayago's tenure as State Chairman is his accessibility and inclusiveness. Recognizing the importance of teachers and their concerns, he made his office and phones open to all teachers, allowing them to easily reach out for assistance or guidance. This gesture not only demonstrates his genuine care and concern for teachers' welfare, but also establishes an open line of communication, ensuring that their voices are heard.

Comrade Akayago's determination to resolve long-standing issues within the education sector is praiseworthy. He tirelessly worked round the clock to address the 20-year lingering problems between the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS) and the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) Niger State branch. His wisdom and leadership style, which reject gossip and hearsay, have earned him the respect of teachers and his staff.

Furthermore, Comrade Akayago is a strong advocate for fairness and equality. He firmly believes in the equitable distribution of opportunities and resources. He does not view anyone as an enemy, but instead promotes teamwork and collaboration for the development of teachers and other sectors in the state. This approach fosters a sense of unity and collective responsibility, resulting in a more harmonious work environment and better outcomes for all stakeholders.

In addition to his exceptional leadership qualities, Comrade Akayago has been a vocal advocate for addressing the challenges facing teachers in Niger State. These challenges include dilapidated school structures, lack of instructional materials, non-implementation of annual increments and promotions, delayed payment of salaries, overpopulation in classes, and non-implementation of retirement age extension for teachers. Under his leadership, NUT has continued to call on the state government to address these issues and provide better support for teachers.

Also, Comrade Akayago has fostered a cordial relationship with all unions under the umbrella of NUT, providing them with necessary assistance and cooperation. His ability to work collaboratively with other unions demonstrates his commitment to unity and solidarity within the teaching industry.

As we reflect on the legacy of Comrade Adamu Akayago, we cannot help but be inspired by his passion, dedication, and unwavering resolve. His achievements are not only a testament to his exceptional leadership but a reflection of what can be accomplished when we rally behind a visionary leader.

Today, we extend an invitation to all educators, and stakeholders in the State to join us in supporting Comrade Adamu Akayago's continued leadership. NIGER TEACHERS GO SPIRITUAL OVER NON PAYMENT OF SALARIES

Primary School Teachers in Niger State held a special prayer session to invoke God’s intervention to get their salaries paid.

The teachers have been on strike since January 10 when schools resumed for the second term as they alleged that the government refused to address their plight.

Seven weeks after the state wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers directed primary school teachers to sit at home until when government resolved their problems, neither the State Ministry of Education nor the Niger State Universal Basic Education Board had responded to the plight of the poor teachers.

Pupils have already spent two months out of the three-month term at home.

In a communique issued at the end of the State-Wide Executive Council Meeting, jointly signed by the State NUT Chairman, Akayago Adamu Mohammed; and his Principal Assistant, Secretary-General, Labaran Garba, the union expressed worries over the negative impact of poor treatment of primary school teachers on the future of children of the poor who have no choice than to attend the dilapidated public schools.

“The situation is unhealthy to the development and growth of our educational system,” the communique read in part.

The prayer session, which was held at the State Headquarters of Nigeria Union of Teachers, Minna, featured recitation from the Holy Quran and readings from the Holy Bible while special prayers were offered by pastors and Imams.
