THREE DAYS BEFORE THE DEATH OF PROPHET
Three days before the death of the Prophet ﷺ, his pain began to intensify . At that time, he was in the house of Umm al-Mu’minin Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her). He said, “Gather my wives for me.” When they had gathered, the Prophet ﷺ asked, “Do you permit me to be cared for during my illness in the house of Aisha?”
They replied, “Yes, O Messenger of Allah, we grant you permission.”
When he tried to stand, he was unable to support himself. Ali ibn Abi Talib and al-Fadl ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) came forward and carried the Prophet ﷺ, supporting him as they took him from the house of Maymunah to the house of Aisha. This was the first time the Companions saw him in such a state.
The people began asking anxiously, “What has happened to the Messenger of Allah? What has happened to the Prophet of Allah?” They gathered in the mosque until it became full and crowded. The pain and fever of the Prophet ﷺ increased greatly.
Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said:
“I have never seen anyone suffer from fever as severely as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I would take his blessed hand and wipe his face with it, because his hand was more pure and noble than mine.”
She then heard him say:
“There is no god but Allah. Indeed, death has its agonies.”
The concern and sorrow of the people in the mosque intensified. The Prophet ﷺ asked, “What is happening?” They replied, “O Messenger of Allah, the people fear for you.” He said, “Carry me to them.”
Water was poured over him seven times until he regained some strength. Then he was carried to the mosque and ascended the pulpit. This was his final sermon—his last public address.
He said:
“O people, it seems that you are afraid for me.”
They replied, “Yes, O Messenger of Allah.”
He said:
“O people, my meeting with you is not in this world. My meeting with you will be at the Hawd (the Basin). By Allah, it is as if I can see it from where I stand now.”
Then he said:
“By Allah, I do not fear poverty for you, but I fear that the world will be opened to you, and you will compete for it as those before you competed, and it will destroy you as it destroyed them.”
“O people, Allah, Allah concerning the prayer. Allah, Allah concerning the prayer.”
“O people, fear Allah regarding women. Fear Allah regarding women. Treat women well.”
“O people, if a servant is given the choice between the world and what is with Allah, he should choose what is with Allah.”
At this point, Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) burst into tears and said:
“We would ransom you with our fathers, our mothers, our children, our wealth, and ourselves, O Messenger of Allah!”
The people looked at Abu Bakr for interrupting the Prophet ﷺ, but the Prophet defended him and said:
“O people, leave Abu Bakr. There is none among you who has done me a favor except that I have repaid him—except Abu Bakr. I have not repaid him, and his reward is with Allah. Close all the doors leading to the mosque except the door of Abu Bakr.”
Then he prayed for the Ummah, saying:
“May Allah protect you, may Allah grant you firmness, may Allah grant you victory.”
He concluded with peace upon his nation and was then carried back to his home.
While he was there, Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakr entered holding a siwak. The Prophet ﷺ looked at it but was too weak to ask for it. Aisha understood his gaze. She took the siwak, softened it with her mouth, and placed it gently in the mouth of the Prophet ﷺ.
She later said:
“The last thing that entered the stomach of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was my saliva mixed with the siwak. This was from Allah’s favor upon me.”
Then Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) entered. When she saw him, she cried, for whenever she entered before, he would stand and kiss her forehead. The Prophet ﷺ whispered something to her, and she cried even more. He whispered again, and she smiled. After his death, she was asked about it.
She said:
“He told me first, ‘I will die tonight,’ and I cried. Then he told me, ‘You will be the first of my family to join me,’ and I smiled.”
Aisha said that the Prophet ﷺ then rested his head on her chest, raised his hand toward the sky, and said:
“With the Highest Companion… with the Highest Companion.”
She knew then that he had chosen his Lord.
Jibril (peace be upon him) came and said:
“O Messenger of Allah, the Angel of Death is at the door seeking permission to enter. He has never sought permission from anyone before you.”
The Prophet ﷺ said, “Allow him.”
The Angel of Death entered and said:
“Peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allah. Allah has sent me to give you the choice between remaining in the world or meeting your Lord.”
The Prophet ﷺ replied:
“With the Highest Companion.”
The Angel of Death then said:
“O pure soul of Muhammad ibn Abdullah, depart to the pleasure of Allah and His satisfaction.”
Aisha said:
“His hand fell, and his head became heavy on my chest. I knew then that he had passed away.”
She went out and announced:
“The Messenger of Allah has died. The Messenger of Allah has died.”
The mosque erupted in weeping.
O Allah, send Your blessings and peace upon our master Muhammad, his family, and his companions.
