👉 The Shiveluch volcano - one of Russia’s most active - erupted on the far eastern Kamchatka peninsula on Tuesday, shooting a vast cloud of ash far into the sky that smothered villages in drifts of grey volcanic dust and triggered an aviation warning.

LONDON - Doctors working in England's public health service on Tuesday launched what has been billed as the most disruptive strike in its history, in a dispute over pay and working conditions.

The four-day walkout, which began at 0600 GMT, follows months of strikes by other public and private sector staff as inflation sparks the UK's worst cost-of-living crisis in a generation.

The action by so-called junior doctors - physicians who are not senior specialists but who may still years of experience - comes after a three-day stoppage last month and several strikes by nurses.

It threatens to be the most serious walkout yet and lead to the cancellation of hundreds of thousands of appointments.

The strike affects the NHS in England but not in the UK's other regions.

They are demanding a pay rise of 35 percent, which they say is needed to help make up for more than a decade of salary cuts in real terms.

They also argue pandemic backlogs coupled with staff shortages are massively increasing workloads, endangering patients.

"We have had a massive (pay) cut and we are filling more gaps because people are leaving," said junior doctor Katrina Forsyth, who added she sometimes wept after shifts.

"It's becoming less safe for patients," she said from a picket line after finishing a night shift at St. Thomas' Hospital in London.

The government maintains the pay request is unaffordable, as ministers try to dampen wage demands across the public sector amid stagnant growth and high inflation.

"I hoped to begin formal pay negotiations with the BMA (doctors' union) last month but its demand for a 35 percent pay rise is unreasonable," said Health Secretary Steve Barclay.

Barclay struck a deal last month with unions representing various health workers, including nurses, to increase pay by five percent.

Union members are currently voting on whether to accept it.

Twenty-two tertiary institutions in Nigeria have received a disbursement of N5.5 billion grant from the Abdul Samad Rabiu Africa initiative.

In a statement, the Social Development Specialist of ASR Africa, Edidiong Idang, said each of the institutions got N250 million, under the ASR Africa Tertiary Education Grant Scheme.

ASR Africa, an initiation of the African Industrialist and Chairman of BUA Group, Abdul Samad Rabiu, is aimed to provide solutions to developmental issues affecting health, Education, and Social Development within Africa through its annual $100 million Africa Fund for Sustainable Development and Renewal.

Idang said the idea would further partner with governments and the private sector institutions in Nigeria and across Africa to support education.

“Our belief is that Africans need to rise to provide solutions to African problems. We focus our intervention in Africa and this is expressed mainly on infrastructure development, equipping facilities, and capacity building for researchers, healthcare practitioners, and community-level service providers.

“We also support the efforts of various Governments in Nigeria and Sub-Saharan Africa across our three thematic areas. The Initiative provides both technical and financial resources to partners,” she said.

Israeli settlers march to occupied West Bank outpost

Israeli army kills a Palestinian teenager in a raid as settlers march to an illegal outpost in the occupied West Bank.

Thousands of Israelis led by at least seven cabinet ministers marched to Evyatar, an illegal settlement outpost in the northern Israeli-occupied West Bank that was evacuated by the previous Israeli government in 2021.

Monday’s march, which was led by hardline ultranationalist Jewish settlers, was seen by some as an indication that Israel’s most right-wing government in history is determined to accelerate settlement building on occupied lands despite international opposition.

Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir – both settlers in the occupied West Bank – and at least 20 members of the Knesset were taking part in the march.

A 15-year-old Palestinian boy was killedby Israeli troops on the same day during an arrest raid near Jericho, about an hour south in the occupied West Bank.

The march threatened to further raise tensions heightened by days of unrest during which Israeli police attacked worshippers in the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in Jerusalem, and repeated violence by Israeli forces in recent months.

Thousands of Israeli police and army forces were reportedly deployed to secure the march, adding to an already combustible atmosphere that has accompanied the overlap of major Jewish and Muslim holy days.

Speaking at the march, Ben-Gvir said, “We are here to say that the Israeli nation is strong … we are here and will remain here.”

Daniella Weiss, a settler leader, told Kan public radio that the ministers’ participation in the march could be a “therapy for the government to free yourselves from the dictates of the US and Europe” concerning illegal settlement in the occupied West Bank.
