Amina loved her home very much. It was a small village called Al-Wadi. But her home was dying. A big company called Al-Badr Energy made black smoke that filled the air. This made the water go away. Now, bad sandstorms came more often.
Al-Badr Energy wanted to buy the village. They said it was for a "fresh start." But Amina knew they just wanted to make more of their bad smoke. The people in the village were tired. They were ready to leave. They were too scared to find another way. They were also scared of the stories about the noor-worms.
The noor-worms were big worms that lived in the ground. They glowed with a green light. The people of Al-Wadi thought the light was evil. They said the worms would trap people. Only one person had said the worms were good. That was Amina's great-aunt, Khadija. Khadija was a smart inventor, but the people did not like her. She died many years ago.
Amina was cleaning her great-aunt's old workshop. She found a box with a special drawing and a small book. The drawing was for a machine called "Project Noor." She read the book. It was not a crazy book. It was a book of science.
Amina learned a wonderful secret. The noor-worms were not bad. They were good. The green light they made was a type of power. Khadija's drawing was for a machine that could use this power. The machine could give the whole village clean power and not hurt the worms.
Amina felt hope. She knew she could save her village. But it was hard. She had to build the machine in secret. She used old parts and her own money. She worked day and night. The storm was coming soon. Al-Badr Energy did not like that Amina would not sell her land. The people in the village also talked badly about her.
Then, a big sandstorm came. The power from Al-Badr Energy went out. The village was dark and scared. A group of people from the village, led by a man named Ahmed, came back from the caves. They had been trying to find and hurt the worms, but they were too scared.
Amina had to act. She quickly took the machine to the town center. The people were so scared. The wind howled and the sand was everywhere. She turned on the machine, but nothing happened. It needed more power. It needed to connect to the worms.
She ran to a tunnel where the green light was strong. She faced the big worm. It was not scary. Its eyes were gentle. She touched a wire to the worm’s glowing skin.
Suddenly, the machine in the town center lit up with a bright green light. The light was so strong, it pushed back the storm. The sand and wind stopped near the village. The people, who were scared, now watched with wonder. The light was not evil. It was good.
The next day, Al-Badr Energy left. The village was safe. The air was clean. The noor-worms were no longer seen as bad. They were seen as heroes. Amina was also a hero. Her great-aunt Khadija was a hero, too. The village learned a great lesson: sometimes, the things you are most scared of are the things that will save you.
