Nigerian Army Deploys New Battalion to Mashegu, Mariga, Kontagora as Commander Orders Crackdown on Terrorists

The Nigerian Army has deployed a newly formed battalion to Niger State to reinforce ongoing security operations and strengthen efforts to combat terrorism and other criminal activities across vulnerable communities.

The troops arrived in the state on Monday, 10 August 2026, following the recent expansion of the Nigerian Army.

The newly deployed personnel were received by the people of Niger State alongside the Executive Chairmen of Mashegu, Mariga and Kontagora Local Government Areas. The council chairmen commended the Army for the timely deployment and expressed appreciation to the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shuaibu NAM, for his continued commitment to protecting lives and property in the area.

They also pledged the cooperation of host communities and promised to provide credible information to support military operations.

Addressing the troops on Tuesday, 11 August, the Commander, 18 Brigade Nigerian Army, Brigadier General Husaini Rabiu Toro, charged the personnel to maintain the highest standards of discipline, professionalism and vigilance in carrying out their duties.

The Commander urged the troops to work closely with local communities while respecting the rights of law-abiding citizens and operating strictly within the rules of engagement.

He, however, directed them to decisively neutralise terrorists and other criminal elements operating within their area of responsibility.

The newly inducted battalion is expected to commence operations immediately, with a focus on dominating vulnerable communities across Mashegu, Mariga, Kontagora and Magama LGAs, thereby denying terrorists freedom of action.

The Headquarters 18 Brigade Nigerian Army and its subordinate units reaffirmed their commitment to working with communities, stakeholders and other security agencies to sustain peace and stability in Niger State and its environs.

Restoring sight, restoring hope.

Niger State Deputy Governor, Comrade Yakubu Garba, has flagged off the State's Free Eye Care Camp, reaffirming the commitment of the Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago-led administration to eliminating avoidable blindness and improving access to quality healthcare.

The initiative, organised by the Niger State Ministry of Health in partnership with Qatar Charity Nigeria and the Middle East Clinic, Kano, offers free eye screening, treatment, prescription eyeglasses and cataract surgeries for vulnerable residents across the state.

Commissioner for Health, Dr. Murtala Muhammad Bagana, said cataract remains the leading cause of avoidable blindness, stressing that restoring sight improves quality of life, dignity and productivity.

The outreach was held simultaneously in Minna, Bida, Kontagora, Suleja and Kuta, with cataract patients referred to Minna for free surgeries.

The programme screened over 2,300 people, treated more than 2,000 patients, provided about 700 prescription eyeglasses and scheduled over 380 cataract surgeries. Members of the blind community also received reflective white walking sticks, while post-surgery patients were given food support packages.

The state government commended Qatar Charity Nigeria, the Middle East Clinic and other partners for supporting the initiative, reaffirming its commitment to strengthening healthcare services through strategic partnerships.

Niger State Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Ltd. for the development and implementation of the State's Gas Master Plan, leveraging the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) Gas Pipeline to accelerate industrialisation, investment, and economic growth.

Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago described the agreement as a transformative milestone that will unlock opportunities for agro-allied, fertiliser, and hydrocarbon industries, create jobs, boost the State's GDP, and position Niger State as a major energy and industrial hub. He also announced that the entire AKK pipeline corridor in the State has been designated as an Industrial Development Zone to attract more investors.

NNPC reaffirmed its commitment to maximising the benefits of the AKK pipeline for Niger State through expanded gas distribution to key locations, while implementation of the Gas Master Plan is expected to provide reliable, affordable energy for industries, businesses, and households, as well as unlock the vast economic potential of the Bida Basin.

The agreement reflects a strategic partnership between the Niger State Government and NNPC to advance gas commercialisation, strengthen energy infrastructure, and drive sustainable economic development.
