A Day in the Life of a Video Editor (The Real Behind-the-Scenes)
Being a video editor is one of those roles that’s quietly powerful. We may not be in front of the camera, but we shape the entire experience behind it.
People often ask, “What does your day look like?” So here’s a peek into a typical day in my life as a video editor:
8:30 AM – Project Planning & Review
I start by reviewing the projects on my plate. I check client briefs, deadlines, and make a mental (and digital) note of priority edits. Having clarity at the start of the day is a game-changer.
10:00 AM – Deep Editing Time
This is where the magic happens. I dive into timelines, cut footage, sync audio, color correct, and build the story. I usually wear headphones and zone in — it’s my flow state.
1:00 PM – Break + Creative Reset
A short break helps me return with fresh eyes. I often re-watch what I edited before lunch — and 9 times out of 10, I’ll spot something I want to tweak.
2:00 PM – Revisions & Client Feedback
I review comments from clients or collaborators and work on revisions. This part is about collaboration, not perfection — and it teaches me a lot about how people interpret video.
4:00 PM – Sound Design, Text, and Polishing
Now I layer on music, adjust volume levels, add titles or lower thirds, and make sure transitions are smooth. It’s all about turning good into great.
6:00 PM – Exports, Uploads & Wrap Up
Once a video is ready, I export versions for review, upload to the cloud, and make notes for the next session. I also back up everything (because I've learned that the hard way!).
Every day is different — and that’s what I love. Some days are full of creativity, others are pure grind, but every single project teaches me something new.
Are you a fellow video editor? What does your day look like?
