The difference between Empathy and Sympathy is mainly in how a person understands another person’s feelings.
1. Empathy
Empathy means putting yourself in another person’s situation and feeling what they feel. You try to understand their emotions as if you are in their place.
Example:
If your friend loses a loved one and you deeply understand their pain and feel emotionally connected to their sadness, that is
empathy.
Simple meaning:
👉 Feeling with someone.
2. Sympathy
Sympathy means feeling sorry or showing concern for someone’s problem, but you may not fully feel the same emotion they are feeling.
Example:
- If your friend loses a loved one and you say, “I’m sorry for your loss,” and show kindness, that is sympathy.
Simple meaning:
👉 Feeling sorry for someone.
✅ Short way to remember:
Empathy = I feel what you feel.
Sympathy = I feel sorry for you.
