FG APPROVES 33 NEW UNIVERSITIES INCLUDING ABDULSALAM ABUBAKAR UNIVERSITY OF AGRICULTURE, MOKWA, RAISING NIGERIA'S TOTAL TO 309

The Federal Government has approved the establishment of 33 new universities across Nigeria, increasing the total number of universities in the country to 309.
The newly approved institutions comprise seven federal universities, six state-owned universities, and 20 private universities. The initiative is aimed at expanding access to tertiary education, promoting specialised learning, and strengthening research and innovation across the country.
The seven new federal universities are:
- Federal University of Environment and Technology, Tai, Rivers State
- Federal University of Applied Sciences, Kachia, Kaduna State
- Tai Solarin Federal University of Education, Ijagun, Ogun State
- Federal University of Agriculture and Developmental Studies, Iragbiji, Osun State
- Federal University of Technology and Environmental Studies, Iyin-Ekiti, Ekiti State
- Federal University of Agriculture and Technology, Okeho, Oyo State
- Federal University of Health Science and Technology, Tsafe, Zamfara State
The six newly approved state-owned universities include:
- Abdulsalam Abubakar University of Agriculture and Climate Action, Mokwa, Niger State
- Ebonyi State University of ICT, Science and Technology, Oferekpe
- University of Aeronautics and Aerospace Engineering, Ezza, Ebonyi State
- Benue State University of Agriculture, Science and Technology, Ihugh
- Cross River University of Education and Entrepreneurship, Akamkpa
- University of Innovation, Science and Technology, Omuma, Imo State
The approval also covers 20 private universities spread across different parts of the country. They include:
- Omega University, Delta State
- Regnum Medical University, Lagos State
- Transatlantic University of Medicine and Health Sciences, Anambra State
- City University, Ogun State
- Monarch University, Ogun State
- University of Fortune, Ondo State
- Eranova University, Abuja
- Leadership University, Abuja
- Minaret University, Osun State
- Abdulrasaq Abubakar Toyin University, Kwara State
- Lens University, Kwara State
- Jimoh Babalola University, Kwara State
- Southern Atlantic University, Akwa Ibom State
- Tonnie Iredia University of Communication, Edo State
- Isaac Balami University of Aeronautics and Management, Lagos State
- Unique Open University, Lagos State
- Kevin Eze University, Enugu State
- Bridget University, Imo State
- Azione Verde University, Imo State
- Greenland University
- JEFAP University, Niger State
The approval is expected to significantly boost Nigeria's higher education sector by creating additional admission opportunities for prospective students, encouraging specialised academic programmes, and enhancing research, innovation, and human capital development.
The inclusion of the Abdulsalam Abubakar University of Agriculture and Climate Action, Mokwa, is also seen as a major milestone for Niger State, with expectations that the institution will contribute to agricultural research, climate resilience, job creation, and socio-economic development in the region.
