Look up on May 31, 2026… because the night sky is preparing something special. 🌕
A rare Full Blue Moon will rise after sunset, creating one of the most unusual lunar events of the year.
Despite the name, the Moon won’t actually appear blue. A “Blue Moon” happens when two full Moons occur within the same calendar month — a rare timing event that only comes around every few years.
May already opened with the beautiful Flower Moon on May 1. Now, just before the month ends, a second full Moon arrives to close it out in spectacular fashion.
Peak illumination happens at 8:45 UTC on May 31 — that’s 9:45 AM in the UK and 4:45 AM Eastern Time. But don’t worry, the Moon will appear brilliantly full from May 30 through June 1, giving skywatchers plenty of time to enjoy the view. ✨
And there’s another twist…
This Full Blue Moon is also a micromoon — meaning it will be the smallest and most distant full Moon of the entire year, sitting roughly 252,360 miles away from Earth.
