Look up on May 31, 2026β¦ because the night sky is preparing something special. π
A rare Full Blue Moon will rise after sunset, creating one of the most unusual lunar events of the year.
Despite the name, the Moon wonβt actually appear blue. A βBlue Moonβ happens when two full Moons occur within the same calendar month β a rare timing event that only comes around every few years.
May already opened with the beautiful Flower Moon on May 1. Now, just before the month ends, a second full Moon arrives to close it out in spectacular fashion.
Peak illumination happens at 8:45 UTC on May 31 β thatβs 9:45 AM in the UK and 4:45 AM Eastern Time. But donβt worry, the Moon will appear brilliantly full from May 30 through June 1, giving skywatchers plenty of time to enjoy the view. β¨
And thereβs another twistβ¦
This Full Blue Moon is also a micromoon β meaning it will be the smallest and most distant full Moon of the entire year, sitting roughly 252,360 miles away from Earth.
A rare Blue Moon.
The yearβs tiniest full Moon.
One unforgettable night in the sky.
No telescope needed. No special equipment. Just step outside after sunset, look toward the eastern horizon, and experience one of natureβs most beautiful reminders that the universe is always moving above us.
Because moments like this donβt happen oftenβ¦ and the next time the calendar aligns this perfectly, youβll wish you looked up. π
