Senator Sani Musa’s Misguided Actions: A Threat to Equity and Development in Niger State
The recent actions of Senator Sani Musa (313) in the Red Chamber have once again demonstrated his disregard for the equitable development of Niger State. His attempt to undermine the budgetary allocation for Agaie-Katcha-Baro road is not just a political miscalculation but a direct attack on the people of Zone A. While other senators advocated for additional projects, Senator Musa stood alone in calling for a reduction, further fueling regional disparities.
Even more disappointing is the silence of Senator Peter Ndalikali of Niger South, who failed to counter this blatant act of injustice. As a representative of the affected region, his lack of response raises questions about his commitment to his constituents.
Baro Port: A Neglected Economic Asset
The Baro Port project has long suffered due to the absence of access roads and rail connectivity. During its commissioning, former Minister Rotimi Amaechi acknowledged this issue and emphasized the need to reactivate rail lines and construct a road linking Baro to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). However, years later, these promises remain unfulfilled, leaving the port largely ineffective.
Instead of advocating for solutions, Senator Sani Musa continues to undermine efforts to develop the region. His actions reflect a narrow, self-serving agenda rather than a commitment to the collective progress of Niger State.
A Pattern of Targeting Zone A
This is not the first time Senator Musa has acted against the interests of Zone A. His previous actions include:
1. Opposing the University of Medical Sciences Bill – He actively countered the bill proposed by Rep. Saidu Musa Abdullahi (SMA), which sought to establish a medical university in Zone A.
2. Blocking the Appointment of Prof. Yelwa – He played a key role in reassigning the nomination of Prof. Yelwa from Zone A to Zone B for the position of INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC).
3. Undermining Budgetary Allocations – His recent push to remove funding for Agaie-Katcha-Baro road infrastructure projects further highlights his disregard for the region’s development.
These repeated attacks on Zone A raise serious concerns about his leadership intentions, particularly amid growing speculation that he is positioning himself to succeed Governor Umar Mohammed Bago.
Leadership Comes with Responsibility
Leaders must exercise caution in their public statements and actions. Senator Musa’s reckless approach risks deepening ethnic and regional divisions within Niger State. Governance should be about unity, inclusivity, and development, not personal ambition or regional favoritism.
Farmer Governor Umar Mohammed Bago must call Senator Musa to order before his actions escalate tensions in the state. No leader should be allowed to fuel disunity and suppress the progress of a particular region.
The Nupe People: A Pillar of Peace and Development
The Nupe people, who form a significant part of the affected region, are known for their:
Peaceful nature – They have always prioritized the stability of Niger State.
Accommodating spirit – They have welcomed and coexisted with people from different backgrounds.
Knowledge and education – They have produced great scholars, leaders, and professionals.
Strong faith – They fear no one except God and believe in justice and fairness.
Despite their peaceful nature, the Nupe people will not stand by and watch their rights trampled upon. They are vigilant and aware of the unfolding events in Niger State.
Senator Sani Musa’s continuous targeting of Zone A is unacceptable and must be challenged. The people of Agaie-Katcha-Baro deserve fair representation and equal opportunities for development. The neglect of Baro Port due to a lack of infrastructure is a major setback for the region, and any attempts to hinder its progress should be strongly resisted.
Niger State can only move forward when leaders prioritize unity over division and development over personal interests. It is time for all stakeholders to rise and demand accountability. Let us work together to ensure that fairness, justice, and progress prevail in our beloved state.
