Don't Force Siblings to Share Everything

No, your children don't have to share everything simply because they're siblings.

Children need to learn generosity.
But they also need to learn boundaries.
A child can say:
“That's mine. Please ask before using it.”
Teach children to share things that are meant to be shared while respecting personal belongings.
Siblings can love each other deeply and still have boundaries.

Teach Children About Money Early

If you never teach your child about money, someone else will.

Children can gradually learn:
Needs vs wants.
Saving.
Giving.
Budgeting.
Delayed gratification.
Making thoughtful choices.
You don't need to give a child a complicated financial lecture.
Even something simple like:
“You have ₦2,000. You can spend ₦1,000 and save ₦1,000.”
can begin teaching financial responsibility.

Are You Listening or Waiting to Respond?
L
Your child is talking, but are you actually listening?

Sometimes we're preparing our lecture while the child is still talking.
We interrupt.
We assume we know what happened.
We immediately defend someone else.
We immediately say:
“That's nothing.”
“Stop crying.”
“You're overreacting.”
Try listening completely first.
Then respond.
Sometimes a child needs:
“I understand why that upset you.”
before they are ready to hear:
“Now let's talk about what you could have done differently.”

The Parent Who Apologizes

I apologized to my child today and no, it didn't make me look weak.

Sometimes parents lose their temper.
Sometimes we misunderstand.
Sometimes we react too quickly.
When you are wrong, apologize.
Not:
“I'm sorry, but you made me angry.”
Try:
“I was wrong to shout at you. I was angry, but I should have handled it differently.”
You're not losing authority.
You're modelling accountability.
Your child learns:
“Being an adult doesn't mean never making mistakes. It means taking responsibility for them.”

Your Child's Mistake Is Not Their Identity

Your child failed mathematics. That doesn't mean your child is a failure.

Separate the behaviour from the child.
Instead of:
“You are lazy.”
Say:
“You didn't put enough effort into this.”
Instead of:
“You are rude.”
Say:
“What you said was disrespectful.”
Instead of:
“You are a liar.”
Say:
“You told me something that wasn't true.”
Words matter because children often internalize what they repeatedly hear about themselves.
Correct the behaviour.
Don't destroy the identity.
