Vanity Upon Vanity
Seven years ago, the world came to a standstill.
The streets that never slept became silent. Airports closed. Businesses shut their doors. Hospitals overflowed. Families were separated. People who kissed their loved ones goodbye in the morning never had the opportunity to see them again. COVID-19 reminded humanity of a truth many had forgotten: life is far more fragile than we imagine.
Some people spent decades building businesses, only to watch them collapse within a few months. Others who had enormous wealth discovered that money could not buy another breath when life slipped away. Titles, fame, influence, and possessions suddenly meant very little in the face of a virus that showed no respect for social status.
The Bible says, "Vanity of vanities, all is vanity." Those words became more than a verse during that season. They became reality. We saw how quickly everything we depend on can disappear. In what seemed like a moment, plans changed, dreams were interrupted, and the future became uncertain for the entire world.
Yet, through all of that, many of us are still here today.
Not because we were stronger than those who passed away. Not because we were richer, wiser, or more deserving. We are here because God, in His mercy, allowed us another opportunity to live.
That should make us pause.
We should continue to work hard. We should chase our dreams, build businesses, pursue excellence, and provide for our families. There is nothing wrong with ambition. But ambition should never cost us our integrity. Success should never require us to abandon our values. Wealth is a blessing, but it becomes dangerous when it replaces God in our hearts.
The pandemic taught us that life can change without warning. The money we are willing to compromise for today may not even matter tomorrow. The position we are fighting to obtain can disappear overnight. But a life lived with integrity, compassion, and faith will always have lasting value.
As you pursue your goals, remember what the world experienced. Work diligently, but do not cheat. Dream boldly, but do not oppress others. Seek success, but do not lose your soul in the process.
Because at the end of the day, the greatest achievement is not how much we accumulated, but how faithfully we lived, how sincerely we loved, and whether our lives brought glory to God.
May we never forget the lessons COVID-19 taught the world. May we value people above possessions, purpose above pride, and God above everything else.
