CHAPTER 2

The pain was unbearable. I clutched my stomach so hard, crying in agony and coughing out Blóód.

Suddenly, my apartment door creaked open and my younger sister walked in, humming happily.

“Hey sis…” she stopped halfway, her eyes widening when she saw me sprawled on the floor.

She dropped her bag and immediately ran to me.
“Jesus Christ! Sister, what happened to you?” she screamed, panic already written all over her face.

“Ta…ke m…e to… th…e hospital…” I managed to whisper, stretching out my trembling hand.

Without wasting time, she dragged me up, throwing my arm across her shoulder. Tears were already streaming down her face as she cried and muttered prayers under her breath, prayers I couldn’t even focus on.

Then, everything went dark. I passed out.

When I woke up, my eyes were heavy. My vision blurred as I struggled to adjust. Slowly, the shapes around me became clearer. I saw my family standing by my bedside.

My mother was holding my hand tightly, staring into my eyes. Her own eyes were swollen and red from crying.

“Chioma?” she called softly, her voice trembling. Then she turned quickly to the door. “Doctor, she’s awake!” she shouted.

The doctor rushed in and began checking my vitals.
“She’s recovering, ma’am,” he said calmly.

My mother leaned closer to me, her eyes piercing through mine.
“Chioma, what did you eat? Where did you go to? Which food did you eat? The doctor said you were poisoned…”

I opened my mouth, but no words came out. The memories of what happened replayed in my mind, stinging my chest with regret. I couldn’t tell her the truth, not that Jude, the very man I had loved my whole life and trusted, was the one who tried to kîll me.

Mama had never liked Jude. From the first day I mentioned his name, she disapproved of him. She only supported my decision later because she wanted to respect my choice.

“I… I… I don’t know. I can’t remember,” I stamme

CHAPTER 1

My name is Chioma, and I never thought that in my life I would love someone this much.

I met Jude in my third year at the university, and since then, I’ve been head over heels in love with him. At first, I was the one chasing him around, acting like a fool for love. But then, one day, something changed, Jude’s character softened toward me. To my greatest surprise, he started treating me better than ever and eventually proposed to me.

I was overjoyed. I thought he truly loved me.

One day, Jude and I went to visit his mother. In the middle of our visit, Jude suddenly collapsed. He was coughing out Blóód, and we rushed him immediately to the hospital.

I panicked.
Mama panicked.

What could be wrong with him? I kept asking myself.

Moments later, the doctor came out with a heavy look on his face. He told us that Jude had kidney failure and needed a donor immediately. The donor fee, he added, was very expensive.

That night, I could not sleep. I kept tossing and turning on my bed, thinking of where I could possibly find the money to save Jude’s life.

The following morning, Jude’s mother appeared at my doorstep. I was shocked to see her that early. Her face was swollen and red from tears.

“Mama, please come inside. Have you been crying?” I asked with concern, helping her in.

“My daughter, please help my son. I don’t want to lose him. He’s my only child. We don’t have money to get a kidney donor for him. Please help a poor widow like me,” she begged, going down on her knees.

At first, I didn’t fully understand what she was asking me to do, until she finally voiced it out.

“Please… be the donor. I beg you. Don’t worry, you’re already my daughter-in-law. I promise you that if you do this one thing for me, I’ll make sure that Jude marries you into our family.”

Her words pierced through me and sank deep into my heart.

Mama Finna looked at Sola,thank Jide o,yes,Sola,do you have anything to say?,she asked

Sola hesitated,she was also badly affected by the July salary Mama Finna had not paid,during the holiday,she had only paid them half of their salary,Nneka and her were paid the same amount, meaning their take home every month is the same.
