My neighbor’s wife took a loan to fly to her father’s burial because she didn’t want her family to think she was struggling.

My neighbor had already helped her pay her own ₦700,000 contribution towards her father’s burial.

After that, his wife suggested they should take a flight to Port Harcourt so it wouldn’t look like they were suffering.

My neighbor refused.

“Even the ₦700k I paid, I had to balance it with a loan. Will they chase us back because we came with our car?”

His wife insisted she was the first daughter and that her family had always seen her as someone who had money.

She took a loan, booked a one-way flight to Port Harcourt, and left four days before the burial.

My neighbor drove down in his car a day before the burial.

After the burial, his wife wanted to return with him in his car.

He refused.

She had to take a night bus back.

Since she returned last night, she has been shouting at her husband non-stop.

Brother you no dey Yankee but this is my advice for every man in Yankee.

If you are 21–29 and don’t have something tangible you’re doing, if you’re driving Uber, working in a factory or delivery, as long as it’s minimum wage or slightly above, please join the military: Navy, Army or Air Force.

I gave a friend this advice 3 or 4 years ago. His wife was so against it that the day he shipped to boot camp he didn’t let her know.

I was one of the few people who wrote him letters and sent him money at boot camp.

Today he has a stable job and lives comfortably, but he’s divorced from his wife now.

If you know what you’re doing, you can’t go wrong joining the military.

The United States gives companies incentives to hire veterans so they lower the bar so you can get the job. They also know military service means you already have discipline.

I once read a lawyer say that when a woman gets married after 30, she has already avoided her “first divorce.”

Not because marriage after 30 is guaranteed to work, but because by that age, you are expected to know yourself better, understand what you want and, more importantly, know what you should never accept.

But there is another side to it.

I used to think women who marry in their 30s choose their partners more carefully, but it doesn’t always work that way.

In fact, in this part of the world, some women begin to “settle” once they get to 30 and above because of the pressure to get married.

And knowing what you want can actually make you less willing to tolerate certain things in marriage. You may have avoided one kind of divorce by marrying later, but you can still end up divorced because you know better than to stay where you are constantly treated badly.

Sometimes, the problem isn’t that you don’t earn enough. You simply have too much access to the money you are trying to save.

When you convert a portion of your income to dollars, the psychological barrier can make you think twice before spending it on things you don’t really need.

But don’t stop at simply keeping dollars in an account.

This new guy in my compound cleared a bushy space to farm.

The caretaker warned him to stop, saying he wanted to plant there too.

The guy said, “You’ve been here for years and never planted anything. It’s now you want to plant?”

The caretaker said yes.

The guy travelled, came back and found the land still bushy. He cleared it again and planted corn.

He travelled again.

The caretaker went to the farm and scattered everything he planted.

Yesterday, a neighbour shared a picture of the new guy in our compound WhatsApp group.

He is a soldier.

This morning, we saw our caretaker in the same farm, reconstructing the ridges he had scattered....
