Whenever someone has a strong opinion about someone else or something, it mostly says more about them than whatever the subject matter may be.
This also applies especially to hatred, resentment or prejudice as regards other people. But the sad irony often comes to the fact that prejudice is, in major cases, a harbor of secret attraction towards those in the limelight of the publicly expressed hatred.
MARCUS AURELIUS wisely observed,
“What if someone despises me? Let them see to it. But I will see to it that I won’t be found doing or saying anything contemptible. What if someone hates me? Let them see to that. But I will see to it that I’m kind and good-natured to all, and prepared to show even the hater where they went wrong. Not in a critical way, or to show off my patience, but genuinely and usefully.”
For this reason, we need to do two things when facing hatred or ill opinions from others.
First, we need to ask: Is this opinion within my control?
If there is a chance for influence or change, then take it.
Second, if there isn’t a room for change or influence, accept such person as they are, and never hate a hater less you become like him.
The Bottom Line:
In dealing with haters, we need to realize that our job is already tough enough. We don’t really need time to think or worry about what other people are thinking whether positive or negative, even if they are about us.
