Many Nigerian Youth Can’t Even Think of Marriage Because They Are Jobless — Cardinal Onaiyekan

Cardinal John Onaiyekan has expressed concern over Nigeria’s worsening unemployment crisis, saying many young graduates can no longer think about marriage or building a future because they cannot find jobs.

Speaking during an interview on Frontline, a current affairs programme on Eagle 102.5 FM, Ilese-Ijebu, Ogun State, the Archbishop Emeritus of Abuja reflected on Nigeria’s economic situation following the recent meeting between the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria and President Bola Tinubu.

Onaiyekan said the true measure of any government’s success should be the well-being of its citizens rather than economic indicators such as GDP or reports from international institutions.

He said: “If we admit that the role of government is the welfare of citizens, then it means we are not going to judge the success of our government on the basis of the statistics from GDP, from the World Bank, or whatever. The important thing is, what, how is the life of the Nigerian?”

Describing youth unemployment as one of Nigeria’s biggest challenges, the cleric noted that many university graduates remain jobless despite years of education.

He said: “The terrible thing now is many of our young people that have struggled to finish university are all going around with their degrees. They are unable to get a job. Therefore, they can’t even think of marriage. They can’t think of starting a family. They can’t think of planning their life. That is terrible,” the Cardinal lamented.

He warned that growing frustration among unemployed youths could have serious consequences if not urgently addressed, urging the government to show the political will to govern with honesty, fairness and justice.

He said: “The only thing it takes is a political will to do the right thing, to be honest in how government is run, to be just to everybody, to be fair in this.”

My father was a Malam for many years, but before the end of his life on earth, he gave his life to Jesus Christ. That is one testimony I will never stop thanking God for.

I have already shared the story of how I was conceived, how my parents had no child until a man of God prayed for them, even though my father was a Malam. Because of that, my father knew there was something different about my life.

When I became born again as the firstborn of the family, the persecution was intense. The entire family turned against me. They pressured my father to disown me, saying I had disgraced him, disgraced the family, and set a bad example for my younger siblings by leaving Islam. At that time, no one in our family was a Christian.

Even in the village, there were hardly any young believers. The church met in a classroom, filled mostly with elderly men and women. There was nothing outwardly attractive about it. Yet after my encounter with Jesus, I couldn’t stay away. In fact, on the very first day I attended, they expected me to preach because they were so excited that a young educated person had finally joined them.

Despite all the pressure, my father never disowned me. He never persecuted me, and he never gave anyone permission to harm me, this didn’t stop the persecution though but at least it was less compared to if he had agreed.

Looking back, I sincerely believe that one decision is one of the reasons I am still alive today. Had he agreed with those who wanted to hurt me, my story might have ended differently.

What amazed him most was the change he saw in my life. I became more respectful, more loving, more caring, and more responsible. Not just my father, but the entire village could testify that something had changed in me. That is what Christ does. I am not saying this to boast, but to show the transforming power of Jesus.

One day my father told me something I have never forgotten. He said, “I know I will not end my life as a Muslim. My time has not yet come, but when it comes, I will give my life to Christ.”

Those words stayed with me.

Although he was not rich but his support to my new journey was more than gold to me, and many people stopped supporting me financially because of my faith, my father still stood by me with the little strength he had. That made me love him even more. I was really surprised, my father was a very tough man, so he not disowning me was a miracle. Deep in my heart, I kept praying that he would never leave this world without Christ.

Then, on his sickbed, while I was away in the mission field, he kept calling for me.

“Inusah, I want to see you immediately.”

About three days later, I hurried back to the village in the night. When I got there, he looked at me and told me he wanted to give his life to Christ.

I knew that moment was sacred.

I and my friend Pastor Abdulai Nathaniel led my father to Jesus, and we prayed together.

The next morning, I rushed him to the hospital. He got down from the motor bike and walked into the clinic looking surprisingly strong. As one of my friends went to call the nurses, my father lay down on the bed.

Less than a minute later…

He was gone.

I cried like a little child. I loved that man so much. I wished he had lived longer to see what God would continue to do through my life and ministry. But God had written a different ending.

As I wept, the Lord opened my eyes.

I saw my father smiling… and waving at me, this moment was displayed on the clinic wall like I was watching a movie from a projector.

At that moment, every fear disappeared. I knew he was with the Lord.

My father did not spend years in the church. He received Christ only shortly before he passed. Yet one genuine moment of faith in Jesus changed his eternity.

Jesus Christ still saves. As long as there is breath, there is hope.

My father went to be with the Lord on 28th December, 2024.

God is faithful, and I will forever thank Him for the legacy my father left behind.

Parked cars worth over ₦500 million inside the compound.

Then you hired a gateman to protect properties worth well over ₦1 billion... and you're paying him ₦70k a month.

The same chef that cooks every meal you eat and literally controls what enters your body and determines the next minute you will stay on this earth is earning ₦100k monthly.

Sometimes I just sit down and wonder.

You trust these people with your life and your entire wealth, yet you pay them salaries that can barely take care of them.

Anyways... pray your enemies never come in contact with them sha 😊.
