HISTORY TODAY.
Do you know that July and August was named after Julius Caesar and Augustus - The Romans Emperor's?
Let me explain... Read with me! 🥰
Yes, July is named after Julius Caesar. In 44 BCE, the Roman Senate renamed the month "Quintilis" to July in his honor, as it was the month of his birth.
August was also named after Augustus Caesar, the first Roman Emperor.
The BCE (Before Common Era) and CE (Common Era) system can be a bit confusing.
Let me explain it more better:
BCE (Before Common Era) counts years backward from 1 BCE, similar to how BC (Before Christ) works.
CE (Common Era) counts years forward from 1 CE, similar to AD (Anno Domini).
So, in BCE, the higher the number, the further back in time it is. For instance, 100 BCE is earlier than 44 BCE.
Read with me let me illustrate more:
100 BCE Julius Caesar is born.
44 BCE: Julius Caesar is assassinated, and later that year, the Roman Senate renames the month "Quintilis" to July in his honor.
The year 44 BCE is 56 years after 100 BCE, meaning Caesar was about 56 years old when the month was renamed in his honor.
Renaming Quintilis to July.
__________________________
After Caesar's assassination, the Roman Senate decided to honor him by renaming the month of Quintilis (the fifth month in the old Roman calendar, which started in March) to Julius (July).
This decision was part of the broader effort to consolidate Caesar's legacy and recognize his contributions to Rome.
Explanation of BCE and CE
100 BCE: The year Caesar was born, 100 years before the start of the Common Era (CE).
44 BCE (BCE)The year Caesar was assassinated and the month 'Quintilis" was renamed July, 44 years before the start of the Common Era (CE).
In BCE (Before Common Era), the years are counted backward from 1 BCE. Therefore, 44 BCE is closer to 1 BCE than 100 BCE, making 44 BCE a later date than 100 BCE.
July was the 5th not the 7th month in the Roman calendar. Before Julius Caesar, the month was known as Quintili
