HAUNTED INN

Ben, his elder brother, and their girlfriends could barely see the road ahead as rain poured relentlessly. They were driving home from a school holiday party out of town, and the storm made visibility nearly impossible—no more than a foot in front of their car. Exhausted and terrified, they breathed a sigh of relief when a sign appeared up ahead for a place to stay the night. They would finish the rest of the drive in the morning.

Overjoyed, they rushed into the inn, shaking off the cold rain. The old building smelled of moist wood and mothballs, yet it was remarkably clean. An elderly innkeeper greeted them warmly, explaining excitedly that they were his only guests that night. He would give them his favorite suite.

First, he showed them a large, luxurious room with a king-sized bed and expansive windows. Then, he led them down the hall to a smaller room with a single twin bed—once used by the maid back when travelers carried many belongings. Next, he took them to the deck and introduced them to the old lady who handled cleaning and room service.

Where she sat, the area was cloaked in darkness. Only her long gown, brushing the floor, was visible, along with the creaking of the chair she occupied. She did not respond to their greetings. As they left, they noticed a mischievous gleam in the innkeeper’s eyes.

After the tour, the innkeeper wished them a good night. The group climbed to their rooms, exhausted but unaware of the night’s strange events awaiting them.

---

That night, Ben was awakened by a faint knock at the door.

“Turn-down service,” a voice called softly from beyond.

“No, thank you,” Zach replied.

A second knock followed. What kind of room attendant visits in the middle of the night? Ben wondered. Perhaps he was dreaming. He closed the door, locked it, and tried to return to sleep. Yet the voice came again.

Finally, Ben stood, opened the door, and peered out—but no one was there. Only a shadow moving quickly around a bend caught his eye.

“Hello!” he called, stepping out cautiously, following the figure.

He reached the bend—but the person had vanished. Around the next corner, he saw a large window illuminated by moonlight. A young lady, dressed entirely in white, sat there whistling melodiously. Her song seemed to cast a spell over Ben. Despite the warning inside him, he was drawn forward, unable to resist.

He wanted to scream but felt his actions no longer under his control. Step by step, he approached the mysterious woman. Slowly, she turned her face toward him.

Then a hand suddenly grabbed him, pulling him into darkness.

“You are gone for good if you see her face,” a strange voice warned.

A bitter cry echoed, and a hand pressed a pair of nodules into his palms. “Fix these into your ears. Don’t remove them until you return to your room,” the voice instructed.

Ben obeyed. Once safely back, he slammed the door, locked it, and struggled to catch his breath. His brother awoke, calling his name. He quickly recounted the eerie encounter.

They laughed, teasing him as a scaredy-cat, dismissing his warnings. Ben insisted he spoke the truth—the inn was haunted. Resigned, he joined them in sleep.

---

Strange things happened while they slept. Andrew, his girlfriend Rebecca, and Ben’s girlfriend Anna awoke to find their clothes neatly folded and packed in their backpacks. Beds were made, hair carefully combed—and the girls’ hair braided. Andrew, nearly naked, discovered his nightclothes washed and packed as well.

This shocking discovery confirmed Ben’s story. They hurried to the front desk, impatient as the innkeeper filled out his paperwork by hand. Once done, Andrew and the girls dashed to the car, while Ben waited outside.

“You’re lucky, boy,” the innkeeper called from behind the desk.

Ben turned to him, curiosity piqued.

“Thank you for choosing the inn,” the innkeeper said. “It can get very quiet here, with only me and the room attendant—who has been keeping her duties for 200 years.” He smiled mischievously. “Next time, if you hear a knock in a strange place, do not open the door. Curiosity may spell doom. The next encounter could be very bad.”

Ben hurried to the car, jumping in as his brother sped off. He pondered the events of the past few hours. Everything seemed impossible, too heavy for a small mind to comprehend.

Later, he searched online for the Inn at Ford Havens. Headlines confirmed his fears: “The Maid Who Haunts the Ford Havens Inn” and “Ford Havens Inn – A Place From Where Men Go Straight to Eternity.”

Suddenly, he knew who had knocked on his door, who kept the inn, and who the mysterious lady in white was. He sighed in relief, thankful he hadn’t been dragged into eternity for spending a single night at a haunted inn.

As they drove past another sign, it read:

“FORD HAVENS INN – A Straight Way to Eternity (Where Spirits Tend to Your Needs)”

A newcomer might take it lightly—but Ben and his friends knew better.

WHISPER (EP3)
“This was the school basement,” the woman continued. “People hardly go down there for weeks. It wasn’t until the fourth day—when I hadn’t shown up to school, and my husband called to report I never came home—that Mr. Daniels remembered me. But he said nothing to anyone. He waited until everyone left the school. Then he rushed to the basement… and found my body already rotting.”

Sofia shivered.

“He panicked,” the woman said softly. “But then he quickly came up with a plan to get rid of me.”

The strange woman paused and looked at Sofia, as if checking whether she was still listening.
Sofia, who had been paying close attention, flinched at her gaze.

“Stop being afraid of me,” the woman said gently. “In this realm, I am under your control.”

“So… what finally happened? And how do you want me to help?” Sofia asked.

“He took my body out and buried me secretly, without the proper rites,” the woman said, her voice trembling. “I have been trying to reveal the truth, but humans only see it as a frightening event. Wandering spirits can speak through elements… and through people who are called ladders.”

Sofia swallowed hard.
“What do you want me to do?”

“I need you to expose Mr. Daniels’ dirty secrets,” the woman said. “I need to be given a proper burial so my soul can rest. My poor husband is slowly dying inside because he keeps searching for me.”

Her sad gaze dropped to the floor.

“How will your husband feel when he finds out you’re dead? He might hurt himself,” Sofia said, suddenly feeling sorry for her.

“It’s better he finally knows where I am.”
The woman blew gently on the mirror she held.

The glass flickered, and an image appeared—a man sitting on the floor of a dim room. He was drunk, unkempt, surrounded by photos of a beautiful woman. He was crying.

Sofia’s fear slowly turned into sympathy.

“I’ll help you,” she said softly. “But I need to convince my parents first.”

The woman’s lantern glowed brighter.

“Thank you, Sofia. I’ll see you soon… Your father is back.”

Sofia quickly turned to the window.
She saw headlights approaching and heard her father’s horn. She smiled, then turned back to the woman—

But the woman was gone.

Everything was normal again.
The TV show had resumed.
The lights were back on.

“Sofia, who were you talking to?” her mother called from the hallway.

“Just a friend,” Sofia said with a small smile. “A very strange kind of friend.”
She winked.

WHISPER (EP2)
Sofia sat in front of the television, waiting for her father to come home. Her mother was upstairs in her room.
She switched to her favorite show—she never liked missing a single moment, especially since she would talk about it with her friends at school the next day.

But then the house squeaked again as a strange breeze blew through.
This time, goosebumps covered her whole body.

Her mind rushed to her mother.

“Mom!” she called out in fear.

(Free Voice): “Sofia Lee… be my ally… I won’t hurt you. Be my friend.”

Sofia’s eyes darted around the room.
The voice moved with the soft breeze, whispering all around her.

She curled herself into the couch cushion, too scared to move.
She squeezed her eyes shut.

“This isn’t real! I’m imagining it!” she repeated quickly, again and again.

Then her TV show froze.

All the characters on the screen began saying the same words in a practiced, robotic tone:

“Sofia, be my friend. Sofia, I’m your ally.”

Over and over.

Then—
the living room lights went out.

A noise came from the kitchen, followed by footsteps…
Footsteps that sounded like someone wearing heels… walking toward her.

She pressed herself deeper into the couch, whispering,
“This isn’t real. I’m hallucinating.”

But pep talk or not, she couldn’t make herself open her eyes.

(Bodiless Voice): “Sofia Lee…”

The voice whispered right into her left ear.

Her eyes flew open.

And what she saw drained the life out of her.

A young woman stood before her, wearing a long black cloak that covered her entire body—even her face.
Her hair floated upward, defying gravity.
Her skin was pale white.
Her eyes were not human eyes… they shone like pieces of glass.

She wore red heels—heels that looked like they were dripping blood onto the floor.

In one hand, she held a mirror.
In the other, a lantern.

Sofia opened her mouth to scream, but no sound came out.

“I won’t hurt a friend,” the woman said softly. “Please, Sofia, listen to me. Only a human in this realm can plead my case.”

Sofia shut her mouth tightly, trembling as tears rolled down her face.

“I can’t help you… I don’t even know you,” Sofia whispered, afraid to say anything that might anger the strange woman.
Her mind raced back to stories and movies where strange creatures ask for help—and punish anyone who refuses.

“I need peace,” the woman said sadly. “I want to stop wandering this world. I was killed unjustly. I have been summoned many times to do evil tasks for men who understand the realm I am trapped in. Until I return, I remain a slave here. Help me.”

Sofia looked at her for a long moment.
She wiped her tears quickly and forced herself to listen.
Even though she was terrified… she sensed truth in the woman’s words.

“Who are you?” Sofia asked softly.

“Before my death, I was a teacher at Champagne High School. I worked hard and believed in equality. I hated discrimination. But some of my colleagues didn’t like that. Some hated me. I died during an argument that turned violent. Mr. Daniels pushed me during the heated fight. I fell, hit my head badly, and began bleeding. I couldn’t get up. We were the last two in the school that day. He just shrugged… and left me there.”

WHISPER (EP1)
It was a quiet, heavy night in Maryland. Sofia had just gotten home from school and settled down to start her homework. The old family house—over a hundred years old—creaked and sighed with every passing breeze. To Sofia, those sounds were familiar, comforting reminders of a home once full of life. She could almost hear her grandmother in the kitchen, pots clanging as she cooked, calling Sofia by the nickname she loved.

But now, after school, the house was always silent.

Sofia was halfway through her first math problem when the front door slammed downstairs.

“Mom…?” she called.

No answer.

Probably just the wind, she told herself, and went back to work.

Almost finished with her assignment, she heard soft clinks from the kitchen—pots and pans. But her mother hadn’t come in.

Then came the voice.

(Incorporeal Voice): Sofia Lee…

“One second!” Sofia shouted back, assuming it was her mother. She hurried to close her books.

(Incorporeal Voice): Sofia Lee…

A shiver ran down her neck. She stood, walked downstairs… and froze.

Every pot and pan had been neatly unstacked and arranged on the kitchen sink.

At that moment, the side door swung open. Her mom walked in with grocery bags.

If she was just getting home… who had touched the pots?

Her mom looked at the mess.
“You’re definitely helping me cook tonight, Sofia Lee.”

“I didn’t do this,” Sofia whispered.

“Then who did?” her mother asked, confused.

“I don’t know… I heard my name, thought it was you. I came downstairs and saw all this,” Sofia replied.

Her mom rolled her eyes.
“That’s enough spooky talk for today. Come help me carry these groceries.”

Sofia obeyed, though worry lingered on her face.

“Mom,” she whispered while helping, “you have to believe me. Something’s in this house… something strange.”

“Sofia, please,” her mom snapped. “No more of that nonsense.”

Sofia fell quiet, hurt. Her mother noticed and tried to cheer her up while they worked in the kitchen. And for a moment, Sofia almost forgot the chilling voice…

Almost.
