NSIT ATAI FIRST LADY REACHES OUT TO WIDOWS, DONATES CASH, RELIEF MATERIALS

The Wife of the Executive Chairman of Nsit Atai Local Government Area, Mrs. Emem Nyong, on Friday, July 24, 2026, hosted widows drawn from the ten wards of the Local Government Area at the Council Secretariat, Odot, where she distributed cash gifts and relief materials as part of a humanitarian outreach tagged "A Day with the Widows."

The programme, themed "Justice, Dignity and Economic Power for Widows," was designed to celebrate widows, promote their wellbeing, and provide practical support aimed at improving their livelihoods.

Speaking at the event, Mrs. Nyong expressed profound appreciation to the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, His Excellency, Pastor Umo Eno, PhD, for his compassionate and people-centred leadership, noting that his unwavering commitment to the welfare of vulnerable citizens continues to inspire humanitarian interventions across the State.

She also commended the Coordinator, Office of the First Lady, Noble Lady Helen Eno Obareki, for her outstanding dedication to the welfare and empowerment of women, widows and other vulnerable groups throw GIFA, describing her as a beacon of hope whose exemplary leadership continues to inspire women across Akwa Ibom State.

Mrs. Nyong further appreciated her husband, the Executive Chairman of Nsit Atai Local Government Area, Hon. Prince Anthony Nyong, for his steadfast support and commitment to the wellbeing of the people, which, she said, has created an enabling environment for impactful initiatives that continue to touch the lives of the vulnerable.

Addressing the widows, she encouraged them to remain hopeful and resilient despite the challenges of widowhood, emphasizing that every widow deserves justice, dignity, love and opportunities for economic empowerment. She explained that the presentation of cash gifts and relief materials was a demonstration of love, compassion and solidarity, assuring them of her continued support and commitment to their welfare.

Rep. Mark Esset's Flood Motion Triggers Swift NEMA Intervention in Uyo Federal Constituency

Barely 48 hours after the House of Representatives adopted a Motion of Urgent Public Importance on the recurring flood disaster ravaging communities in Akwa Ibom State, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) commenced a rapid assessment of flood-affected communities in Uyo Federal Constituency.

The motion, co-sponsored by the Member representing Uyo/Uruan/Nsit Atai/Ibesikpo Asutan Federal Constituency, Rep. Mark Esset, PhD, called on the Federal Government and relevant emergency agencies to take immediate steps to mitigate the impact of the floods and provide urgent relief to affected communities.

In swift response to the House resolution, a NEMA assessment team led by Mr. Victor Akpakpan embarked on an on-the-spot evaluation of flood-ravaged communities across the constituency to determine the extent of the damage and the immediate humanitarian needs of affected residents.

The team was guided by the Senior Legislative Aide to Rep. Mark Esset, Mr. Nsisong Etukudo, who led officials to some of the worst-hit locations, including the Aka Itiam axis, Church of Christ along Abak Road, Nkemba Lane and adjoining areas, as well as other affected communities within Uyo Federal Constituency.

During the visit, NEMA officials interacted with residents, inspected damaged homes, roads, drainage channels, and other public infrastructure while gathering critical information to support the agency's relief and recovery interventions.

Residents of the affected communities, including Madam Cecilia Benedict Cyril, Mr. Uwem Kerns, and Minister Clement Luke, recounted the devastating impact of the flooding on their lives and livelihoods. They decried the extensive destruction of homes, household property, farmlands, and businesses, lamenting that many families had been displaced and left to grapple with enormous losses.

They appealed to the Federal Government and relevant agencies to expedite relief efforts and implement lasting flood control measures to prevent future occurrences.

The residents also expressed profound appreciation to Rep. Mark Esset for bringing their plight before the House of Representatives through his co-sponsorship of the motion, noting that his timely legislative intervention had drawn national attention to their situation.

They welcomed NEMA's prompt assessment visit as an encouraging first step and expressed optimism that it would culminate in the swift delivery of relief materials and the implementation of sustainable flood mitigation measures.

Commending the agency's prompt response, Rep. Mark Esset described the intervention as a demonstration of the Federal Government's commitment to addressing the plight of communities affected by natural disasters. He expressed confidence that the assessment would pave the way for immediate relief and long-term flood mitigation measures for vulnerable communities.

ENVIRONMENTAL SANITATION OFFENCES AND ENFORCEMENT

Pursuant to the Environmental Protection and Waste Management Agency Law, Cap. 51, Vol. 3, Laws of Akwa Ibom State, 2022, and the Public Health Law, Cap. 119, Vol. 5, Laws of Akwa Ibom State, 2022, the Government of Akwa Ibom State reminds all residents that maintaining a clean, safe and healthy environment is a shared civic responsibility.

Residents are advised to comply fully with the State’s environmental sanitation regulations, as violations constitute offences and will attract enforcement actions in accordance with the law.

For the avoidance of doubt, the following constitute environmental sanitation offences:

1. Dumping refuse or household waste outside approved containers or designated disposal points.
2. Throwing any material capable of blocking drains, gutters or waterways.
3. Allowing waste to obstruct the free flow of water on streets or highways.
4. Failure by landlords, caretakers or occupiers to provide standard refuse bins.
5. Discharging human or animal waste in unauthorised places.
6. Allowing overgrown weeds or unkempt surroundings within any premises.
7. Littering streets, roads, highways or public places.
8. Discharging wastewater or other noxious substances onto public roads, gutters or drains.
9. Accumulating refuse, decaying food, animal or vegetable matter, or any substance constituting a public nuisance.
10. Any act or omission that endangers public health, life or property.
11. Loitering, wandering or moving about during the monthly environmental sanitation exercise.

Please Note:

* Anyone found loitering or violating movement restrictions during the sanitation exercise will be arrested and prosecuted.
* Landlords, caretakers and occupiers are responsible for keeping their premises clean and providing standard refuse bins.
* Offenders are liable to sanctions, including fines, community service, abatement of nuisance and other penalties prescribed by law.
* Persons arrested for any of these offences will be prosecuted before a court of competent jurisdiction.

The Government urges all residents to support the environmental sanitation programme by complying fully with these regulations. Together, we can build a cleaner, healthier and safer Akwa Ibom State.

PRINCE NYONG COMMENDS ROTARY'S HEALTHCARE INITIATIVE IN NSIT ATAI

The Executive Chairman of Nsit Atai Local Government Area, Hon. Prince Anthony Nyong, has commended the Rotary Club of Uyo Metropolis and its partners for bringing quality healthcare services to the grassroots through a comprehensive Maternal and Child Health, Disease Prevention and Treatment Outreach held at the Primary Health Centre, Odot.

The medical outreach, which took place on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, was organized by the Rotary Club of Uyo Metropolis in collaboration with Premier Medical Services and the Rotaract E-Club of Ibom Cosmopolitan, with the support of Rotary Clubs across Akwa Ibom State and Rotaract Zone 3.

Speaking at the event, Hon. Nyong described the outreach as a remarkable demonstration of humanitarian service and a worthy complement to the healthcare priorities of his administration. He expressed appreciation to the Rotary Club and its partners for choosing Nsit Atai as one of the beneficiary local government areas, noting that the initiative reflects a genuine commitment to improving the health and well-being of the people.

The Chairman stated that healthcare remains one of the essential pillars of sustainable community development, stressing that access to quality medical services, especially for women and children, is critical to building healthier families and stronger communities.

He lauded the donation of medical equipment to the Primary Health Centre, Odot, as well as the specialized training provided for healthcare personnel on the use of the equipment and infant resuscitation techniques. According to him, the intervention will significantly strengthen the capacity of the health facility to provide quality healthcare services to residents.

Hon. Nyong also praised the launch of the medical and vocational empowerment initiative for pregnant teenage adolescents, describing it as a compassionate intervention that addresses not only healthcare needs but also the social and economic challenges faced by vulnerable young mothers.

The Executive Chairman further expressed profound appreciation to the Chairman of Ediyang Foundation, PAG Ubong Obot, an illustrious son of Nsit Atai, for facilitating the Rotary medical outreach to the local government. He noted that such partnerships and selfless contributions by public-spirited individuals remain vital to community development.

Reaffirming his administration's commitment to improving healthcare delivery, Hon. Nyong assured the Rotary Club and its partners of the Council's continued support for initiatives aimed at enhancing the health and welfare of the people of Nsit Atai.

Earlier in his address, the President of the Rotary Club of Uyo Metropolis, Rotarian Kalu Sylvester, said the outreach was a reflection of Rotary's commitment to humanitarian service and community development.

He explained that the programme was more than a routine medical outreach, describing it as a collective effort by Rotary Clubs across Akwa Ibom State and Rotaract Zone 3 to create sustainable impact through partnership and service.

Rotarian Sylvester noted that maternal and child health remains a major area of focus for Rotary because healthy mothers and healthy children are the foundation of thriving communities. He added that through collaboration with Premier Medical Services and other partners, the Club remains committed to extending quality healthcare services to underserved communities.

Representing the Managing Director of Premier Medical Services, Prof. Nsikak Udoakang, Dr. Usen reaffirmed the organization's commitment to sustaining its partnership with Rotary in delivering healthcare interventions, particularly in the area of maternal and child healthcare. He assured that Premier Medical Services would continue to support initiatives that improve access to quality healthcare across communities.

The outreach featured maternal and child health education, comprehensive eye screening and vision tests, free reading glasses for beneficiaries with visual impairment, free medical consultations, laboratory investigations including random blood sugar (RBS) and malaria tests, free prescribed medications, donation of antenatal care packs to expectant mothers, and the donation of essential medical equipment to the Primary Health Centre, Odot.

Healthcare workers also received practical training on the proper use of the donated medical equipment as well as infant resuscitation procedures, further enhancing their capacity to respond effectively to maternal and newborn health emergencies.

Among the equipment donated to the health facility were sphygmomanometers, fetal dopplers, delivery trays, artery forceps, episiotomy scissors, tissue forceps, gallipots with covers, needle holders, digital thermometers, stethoscopes, mesh nebulizers, paediatric and adult Ambu bags, digital weighing scales, pulse oximeters and other essential medical tools.

One of the highlights of the outreach was the unveiling of a medical and vocational empowerment initiative for a pregnant teenage adolescent identified during the exercise. Under the initiative, she will receive free antenatal and postnatal care and be sponsored to acquire a vocational skill of her choice, empowering her to become financially independent and build a better future for herself and her child.

The event attracted Rotary leaders from across Akwa Ibom State, healthcare professionals, community stakeholders and beneficiaries, all united by a shared commitment to promoting healthier mothers and healthier children.

Also present at the event were the Vice Chairman of Nsit Atai Local Government Council, Hon. Mrs. Affiong Amanam; the Director of Health, Mrs. Nene Ibok; the Supervisor for Health, Hon. Mandu Edemikoh; and other government officials and dignitaries.

Court sentences man to life imprisonment for r@ping 16-year-old girl in Cross River

A High Court in Calabar, Cross River State has convicted and sentenced one John Sunday Eyo, to life imprisonment for r@ping a 16-year-old girl.

The judgement was delivered on Tuesday, 21 July, 2026, by Hon. Justice Blessing Egwu, who found the defendant guilty.

Reacting to the ruling, Basic Rights Council Initiatives (BRCI), the organization that handled the case, commended the Cross River State Police Command for its diligent investigation and prosecution support, as well as the Honourable Attorney General of Cross River State, Etubom Ededem Ani, and the Director of Public Prosecutions, Mr. Okoi Ukam, for their commitment to securing justice in the case.

Also, Mrs. Linda Asuquo, was given special recognition for her dedication throughout the prosecution process, which contributed to the successful conviction.

BRCI appreciated its team and civil society partners for their sustained advocacy and collaborative efforts aimed at safeguarding the rights, protection, and welfare of children across the state.

The organization affirmed its stance against child abuse, stressing that Cross River State has zero tolerance for all forms of violence against children.

The organization also noted that justice for survivors is a shared responsibility, urging government institutions, civil society organization’s, communities, and residents to continue working together to prevent abuse, support survivors, and ensure perpetrators are brought to justice.

REP. MARK ESSET SEEKS EMERGENCY FEDERAL RESPONSE
..as House Debates Recurring Flood Disaster in Akwa Ibom

The Member representing Uyo/Uruan/Nsit Atai/Ibesikpo Asutan Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Rep. Mark Esset, PhD, has called for urgent and coordinated federal intervention to address the recurring flood disaster devastating communities across Akwa Ibom State, warning that the humanitarian situation has reached alarming proportions.

Rep. Esset made the passionate appeal on Wednesday during plenary while contributing to a Motion of Urgent Public Importance titled, "Recurring Flood Disaster Ravaging Communities in Ikot Abasi/Mkpat Enin/Eastern Obolo; and Uyo/Uruan/Nsit Atai/Ibesikpo Asutan Federal Constituencies of Akwa Ibom State." The motion was jointly sponsored by Rep. Mark Esset and the Member representing Ikot Abasi/Mkpat Enin/Eastern Obolo Federal Constituency, Hon. Uduak Alphonsus Odudoh.

The motion sought urgent Federal Government intervention in response to the widespread destruction caused by persistent flooding across the affected federal constituencies, where lives, homes, livelihoods and critical infrastructure have been severely impacted.

Contributing to the debate, Rep. Esset painted a grim picture of the humanitarian crisis confronting residents of his constituency, informing the House that thousands of people had been displaced, lives had been lost, and countless families had been left without shelter and stripped of their means of livelihood.

Describing the situation as both tragic and unacceptable, the lawmaker stressed that the scale of destruction demanded immediate federal attention, noting that the affected communities had continued to suffer despite repeated appeals for intervention.

According to him, the House of Representatives, as the institution closest to the Nigerian people, must rise above partisan considerations and demonstrate genuine commitment to the welfare of citizens facing hardship.

"This House is christened the People's House. It is at a time like this that we must prove that we are truly the People's House by speaking with one voice and calling on all the relevant agencies to come to the aid of the affected members of my constituency," Rep. Esset said.

He urged his colleagues to support the motion in order to accelerate federal response efforts and bring immediate relief to victims whose lives have been disrupted by the disaster.

Rep. Esset specifically appealed to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Federal Ministry of Environment to urgently mobilise emergency response teams to the affected communities, emphasising that government bears both a constitutional and moral responsibility to protect citizens from the devastating effects of natural disasters.

"There is urgent need for intervention because it is a primary responsibility of government," he said, while appealing to his colleagues to support the motion and ensure that affected communities receive the assistance they urgently require.

The motion drew the attention of the House to Section 20 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), which mandates the Federal Government to protect and improve the environment and safeguard Nigeria's natural resources.

The sponsors recalled that between July 16 and 17, 2026, unprecedented flooding submerged several communities in Eastern Obolo Local Government Area, including Okoromboho, Iko, Elile, Amadaka, Okoroiti, Emeroke I and Emeroke II, leaving extensive destruction in its wake. Homes, schools, farmlands, fishing equipment and other vital sources of livelihood were either destroyed or severely damaged.

The motion further noted that on July 18, 2026, flooding also affected Okon Community in Ikot Abasi Local Government Area and Ikot Akpaden Community in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area, compounding the humanitarian crisis across the coastal axis of Akwa Ibom State.

It also highlighted the impact of the disaster on Uyo/Uruan/Nsit Atai/Ibesikpo Asutan Federal Constituency, where communities including Nkemba Street, Iya Street, Ikono Street, Abak Road, Ifa Atai Community and adjoining areas were inundated by floodwaters following sustained rainfall over the weekend.

The lawmakers expressed concern over the recurring nature of the flooding, noting that despite repeated appeals for intervention, affected communities continue to suffer extensive losses of lives, property and livelihoods, underscoring the need for a coordinated and sustained federal response.

Among the prayers contained in the motion was a call on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to immediately undertake a comprehensive assessment of the affected communities and provide emergency relief materials, temporary shelter and other humanitarian assistance to victims.

The motion also called on the relevant House Committees on Emergency and Disaster Preparedness, and Environment to assess the affected areas within the two federal constituencies.

For Rep. Mark Esset, the motion represents another determined effort to secure urgent federal attention for communities grappling with the devastating consequences of recurring floods.

His intervention underscores his commitment to ensuring that the plight of his constituents remains at the forefront of national discourse until meaningful relief is delivered and sustainable flood mitigation measures are implemented.

NAFDAC Commences Nationwide Mop-Up of Banned Sachet Alcohol and Sub-200ml PET Bottles

NAFDAC has commenced a nationwide enforcement operation to remove alcoholic beverages packaged in sachets and PET bottles below 200ml from circulation, in line with the Federal Government's ban on the production, importation, distribution, sale, and use of such products. The exercise, being carried out across the six geopolitical zones, follows the closure of non-compliant manufacturing facilities and is part of NAFDAC's ongoing efforts to protect public health.

NAFDAC enforcement teams are conducting coordinated operations in markets, motor parks, retail outlets, bars, and other distribution channels to identify, seize, and remove banned products from circulation. Manufacturers, importers, distributors, wholesalers, retailers, transporters, and other stakeholders are advised to immediately surrender any remaining stock, as continued possession or sale of the banned products constitutes a violation of the law and may attract seizure, regulatory sanctions, and prosecution.

The enforcement exercise is aimed at reducing underage drinking, harmful alcohol consumption, and substance abuse, particularly among children and young people. The Agency urges members of the public to support the exercise by refraining from purchasing banned products and reporting anyone producing, distributing, or selling them to the nearest NAFDAC office or call 0800-1-623322
