A Farmer's Guide On Pig Breeding Selection: What Breed Of Pig Is Good For A Beginner?

Understanding pig breeds is one of the best way to make the right choice when selecting the kind of pigs you need in your farm especially for beginners.

Every breed have it's own unique features and characteristics, understanding them and knowing how they perform and react to diseases, environmental factors, and reproduction will give you a better knowledge in pigs breed selection.

In pig farming, successful herd development begins with the careful selection of breeding stock. Farmers should choose pigs only from farms that maintain detailed records on mothering ability and piglet's growth rates. These records help identify animals with strong genetics and reliable reproduction performance.

Environment should be a very important factor to consider when buying or selecting breeding stocks. Breeding pigs should come from clean, well-managed farms that prioritize hygiene, and good husbandry practices. Selecting pigs from such farms helps reduce the risk of diseases and improves the overall health of the herd.

They key things to consider when selecting breed is understanding each pig's breeds and their characteristics, such as temperament, fertility and meat quality. Since most pigs have a lifespan of five to ten years, this knowledge supports better long-term breeding decisions.

What Breed Of Pigs Is Good For A Beginner?

As a beginner, you need better knowledge about pig breeds to be able to make the best decision when selecting breeds. I have seen many new farmers complain bitterly about buying pigs that didn't perform, it's either about poor growth or reproduction issues. These are mainly the problem related with bad breeds.

When selecting gilts, farmers should consider the performance of the mother sow. Gilts should come from sows that have weaned nine or more piglets per litter. Avoid gilts from sows with a history of reproduction issues, such as metritis, mastitis, agalactia, or repeated breeding failure.

Strong mothering ability is crucial when selecting breed. A good sow is calm, attentive to her piglets, and thrives in a clean environment. Kindly consider these features when selecting pig breeds as a beginner!!

✅ Fast growth
✅ Disease resistance herd
✅ Higher fertility
✅ Easy management.

How To Cut Feed Costs By 30–50% In Pig Farming In Nigeria This 2026.

Feed production has taken up to 65% of the profits from pig farming. This is due to the increase in price of raw materials used for feed production in pig farming.

Arguably, many farmers are shutting down their pig farms in 2026, temporarily, or even permanently because of the increased costs of feed production. 50kg of PKC is now sold for N16k, N17k and even N20k depending on your location, this price surge doubles the initial price of PKC in earlier 2025, when a bag of the same 50kg of PKC was sold for N6500 to N7k. Bag of corns and soyabeans are also affected by the price hike. A bag of corn is sold for 30-50k, soyabeans are expensive too.

This new challenge has affected many pig farmers, as many are lamenting the increase cost of feed in pig farming..

Why some farmers are planning to shutdown their pig farms in 2026, smart farmers are planning on how to cut feed costs and strategies to help them maintain their place in the business without compromising their standard.

I will show you how to cut pigs feed costs by 30–50% in 2026, with local materials around you. Did you know pigs eat cassava peels? And cassava peels are very good source of energy for your pigs?. Let's talk about cassava peels and how it can help farmers cut feed cost production in 2026.

Cassava peels is a very good source of energy for pigs and is used to mix pig feeds.

Many people throw away cassava peels like waste, but smart farmers are utilizing this waste into useful material especially for feed production. Smart farmers are cutting feed cost by 30–50% using cassava peels and turning it into profits.
Here's why Cassava peels are a big win for pigs and how it can help pig farmers make profits by cutting 30–50% in feed production.

★ Cassava peels are cheaper source of energy, rich in carbohydrates, it give pigs the energy they need to grow faster, gain weight, and stay active. Good energy = faster growth = better market value = good profits.

Cassava peels can be used as substitute to replace corn as energy source thereby cutting feed cost by 30%.

★ Reduces Feeding Cost.

The hike in price of raw materials for feed production in pig farming are really crazy right now. But cassava peels help you;

• cut feed cost by 30–50%,
• help your pig farm survive even when finance is tight,
• small farms survive because of cassava peels.

★ Cassava Peels Is Easily Accessible.

It's very easy to find and prepare in Nigeria, cassava peels is everywhere. Cassava peels can only become safe and nutritious for pigs, when properly,

• Fermented
• Sun-dried
• Or Grinded.

★ Cassava Peels Improves Weight Gain.

When mixed with the right Ingredients, cassava peels become very effective. When combined with;

• PKC
• Soybean meal
• toxic binder.
Pigs grow faster and healthier.

★ Reduces Farm Waste.

What other people see as waste, smart pig farmers see opportunities. Less waste, more productivity, and more profits.

NB: Cassava peels are not complete meal, balance is everything.

Take Note Of This Important Warning!!

❌ Never serve freshly peeled and raw cassava to your pigs,

❌ Always process to remove harmful toxins,

❌ Always add protein & minerals.
Wrong use = poor growth,
Right use = serious profits.

The Importance Of Salt + Clean Water In Pigs Diet.

Most pig farmers neglect the importance of salt in their pig's diet.
Arguably, some pig farmers provide the best feed for their pigs, clean pen, clean water, well treated animals, good environment, but yet still complain of poor performance in their farm.

A farmer reached out to me for assistance whilst complaining of how his pigs are well fed, supplements A1, but yet they still look dull, tired and inactive.

I asked him if he was sure that he was doing everything right, he firmly agreed then I asked him one simple question again, this one got him thinking. Of course, he is one of those farmers who neglect the importance of salt in pig's diet.

I know you will like to know the kind of question I threw at the farmer? Well it's simple, I asked him how often do you give electrolyte water to your pigs?

Chill let me tell you about salt + clean water, little thing, big results.

When I say salt many people panic, but in reality that's what your pigs need to boost mood and health of your animals. Relax, I'm not talking about pouring too much salt like seasoning cubes, please moderately, in controlled amounts, the kind that supports digestion, hydration, and stress recovery.

Livestocks lose electrolytes daily either through heat, stress, diarrhea, farrowing, transportation, even simple fun play. When electrolytes balance is off, growth slow, appetite reduces, and animals just look dull, especially pigs. They don't shout, they just underperform quietly.

A pinch of salt in properly measured drinking water helps restore electrolyte balance. It supports nerve function, muscle movement, gut activity, and water intake. That's why animals on electrolyte water often drink more, eat better, and recover faster after stress.
But you must observe the Golden rule; clean water first and Always.

Dirty water is a disaster, even plus salt no magic will happen. Water, I believe is one of the most accessible and affordable thing around us, clean water is non-negotiable. Fresh, cool, and change regularly. If water is bad, no addictive will save you.

Moderation is key, too much salt will impact kidney and do more harm than good. Your pigs need support not punishment. This strategy supports your animal's health. That small but intentional move is the game changer.

This can be used especially during heat stress, post-farrowing, after deworming, or when animals look dull.

Salt + clean water + correct amount = good metabolism and electrolyte balance.

Livestocks need this balance to thrive.

MASTITIS INFECTION; Safe Drugs To Treat Infection In Pregnant And Lactating Sows.

What is Mastitis?
Mastitis is an infection of the sows' breast tissue. It makes one or more teats become hot, swollen, painful, and hard, and because of the pain, the sow might stop letting the piglets feed. If mastitis is not treated quickly, it can affect her milk, her piglets and even her health.

Mastitis strikes especially during pregnancy or when a sow gives birth. And at this stage, some drugs are not safe to be given to the sow. I will mention safe medication for a pregnant sow with mastitis.
Some drugs are not safe for sows during pregnancy, so here are the safe and most effective ones;

(1). Amoxicillin (injectable solution) - safe in pregnancy.
Amoxicillin is very safe and the best for pregnant or lactating sows.
* It kills the bacteria that causes mastitis,
* Safe and gentle for a pregnant sow,
* Typically given once everyday for 3–5 days.

(2). Meloxicam (Pain & swelling control) - safe in pregnancy.
This particular drug helps reduce the swelling and allow the sow lie down to feed her suckling piglets.
* It's given once daily,
* It makes the sow more comfortable so milk can flow.
