A STRONG REBUTTAL TO OCH’IDOMA’S MISPLACED INTERFERENCE

The recent attempt by the Och’Idoma to disown Adirahu Ny’Igede and to discredit the chieftaincy titles conferred by our revered Chief Ogah Ero is nothing short of an insult to the Igede nation. Such arrogance cannot and will not be tolerated.

Chief Ogah Ero’s Authority is Supreme in Igede Land
Let it be stated clearly: Chief Ogah Ero, the paramount ruler of Igede land, does not need permission, approval, or validation from Idoma or any other group to exercise his authority. As king, he has the absolute right to honor and confer titles on whomever he wishes. Any attempt to question this right is a direct assault on the sovereignty of Igede traditional leadership.

Igede and Idoma Are Not the Same People
We reject in its entirety any attempt to blur the lines of history. Igede people do not share ancestry with Idoma. Our roots are different, our history is different, and our destinies are different. To claim otherwise or to attempt to lord over Igede is a gross distortion of historical truth.

Our Culture Is Distinct and Untouchable
The Idoma culture is theirs, and the Igede culture is ours. We do not practice the same traditions, we do not speak the same language, and we do not answer to the same gods. Therefore, no Idoma institution has the right—traditional or otherwise—to meddle in our internal affairs.

Igede Will Never Bow to Idoma Control
Let it ring loud and clear: Igede is not under Idoma and will never be. We are not subjects of Och’Idoma and cannot be controlled by him. Any statement or action suggesting otherwise is provocative and disrespectful to the dignity of our people.

Respect Is Mutual, Not One-Sided
Igede has never interfered in Idoma traditional matters, nor do we seek to. But if Och’Idoma continues to cross boundaries and insult Igede authority, then we will have no choice but to confront such overreach with equal force. Respect is earned through reciprocity, not imposition.

Och’Idoma’s outburst against Chief Ogah Ero and the Igede nation is reckless and unacceptable. Igede land is not an extension of Idoma land. Our king owes no allegiance to Och’Idoma. Chief Ogah Ero is the custodian of Igede culture and tradition, and his decisions stand supreme within our land. Any attempt to undermine this will be resisted with the full voice and will of the Igede people.

Now That Akume Has Left, What Next?

The 2025 Igede Agba celebration took on a dramatic twist with the presence of Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), at the invitation of Hon. David Ogewu, Member representing Oju/Obi Federal Constituency. To some, the occasion was historic; to others, it was a political show staged to impress. Yet beneath the applause and colorful displays lies a sobering truth: Igede has been here before. Leaders come, make speeches, wave at the crowd, and depart — leaving the people to return to bad roads, failing schools, and crushing poverty. Now that Akume has left, what next?

It is not enough to bask in the fleeting prestige of a national figure gracing our cultural festival. George Akume’s visit will mean absolutely nothing if it does not translate into development for the Igede people. After all, Akume is no stranger to Nigerian politics; he has occupied high offices for decades. What footprint has he left in Igede land until now? None. His sudden appearance at Igede Agba should therefore be viewed for what it is: political tokenism, carefully packaged to buy goodwill for himself and his allies, while the people remain trapped in neglect.

Equally troubling is the role of Hon. David Ogewu, whose duty is to secure concrete dividends of democracy for Oju/Obi. Instead, he appears more concerned with photo opportunities and the politics of spectacle. If inviting the SGF was his grand achievement, then he has failed to understand the true essence of representation. Igede does not need another handshake in the glare of cameras; Igede needs roads, schools, hospitals, and jobs. Ogewu’s invitation may have drawn attention, but attention without results is as good as abandonment.

The Igede people must therefore be vigilant. They must ask themselves hard questions: What did Akume’s visit bring to the table? What projects are being initiated? What commitments were extracted on behalf of the constituency? If the answer is nothing, then this celebration is nothing more than a well-orchestrated distraction. Culture is sacred, but it must never be reduced to a political bargaining chip.

Now that Akume has left, the ball is in Ogewu’s court. He must prove that he invited the SGF for more than mere optics. He must demand federal projects, lobby aggressively, and deliver results. Anything less will expose his leadership as hollow and opportunistic. And the Igede people, who have endured decades of exclusion, must refuse to be pacified by empty appearances.

In the end, Igede Agba 2025 will be remembered not for the speeches of Akume nor the maneuverings of Ogewu, but for whether the people allowed themselves to be deceived yet again. Now that Akume has left, the time for illusions is over. The time for accountability has come.
