PORTRAITS OF COUNTERFEIT CHRISTIANITY
2. BEING GOVERNED BY NATURAL AND UNGODLY APPETITES
Paul the apostle says,
“Now every athlete who goes into training conducts himself temperately and restricts himself in all things. They do it to win a wreath that will soon wither, but we (do it to receive a crown of eternal blessedness) that cannot wither. Therefore I do not run uncertainly (without definite aim). I do not box like one beating the air and striking an adversary. But (like a boxer), I buffet my body (handle it roughly ,discipline it by hardships) and subdue it, for fear that after proclaiming to others the Gospel and things pertaining to it, I myself should become unfit (not stand the test, be unapproved and rejected as a COUNTERFEIT)” (1 Cor 9:25-27 AMP, emphasis added).
Jesus began His ministry after a forty-day fast and the first temptation the devil brought His way according to Matthew’s gospel was related to His need and appetite. Jesus overcame and this remains a lesson for anyone who would go far with God.
In the kingdom, it is expected that we grow to the point of ruling over our natural appetites and proclivities by the power of God; a point where our passions and desires are fine-tuned and refocused so that nothing mundane or external can remote-control them.
When we talk kingdom, we are talking tariff, territory and influence. What influences the territory of your life? What governs your universe? Who do you spend your resources on?
The cost of discipleship is suffering. The high point of discipleship is when you meet the King. Like we have established so far, it is possible for you to be born again without ever meeting the King who is supposed to dictate the pace and outcome of your life. This means anything at all that tickles your fancy can determine how you act at any given time and place.
The spirit realm is a legalistic one. Spirits (whether demons or angels) operate by the principle of law and order —demons are against, while angels are for, law and order. So, when you see demons moving in full swing and having a field day in a believer’s space, you can be sure the principle of law and order has been violated by the believer.
