The Ekimogun Association of Canada Celebrates Black History Month 2026
As Canada marks 30 years since formally recognizing Black History Month in February 1996, the Ekimogun Association of Canada (EAC) is proudly joining the nationwide celebration.
Representing the Ondo people of Ondo City, Nigeria, and its surrounding communities, EAC continues to serve as a vibrant cultural organization for Ondo indigenes living in Canada. Since its official launch in November 1993, the association has provided a strong platform for members to connect, celebrate their heritage, and preserve the rich traditions of the Ondo Kingdom within the diaspora.
Under the leadership of Honourable Nelson O. Akinkugbe, the association remains committed to promoting unity, cultural pride, and community development. Beyond preserving heritage, EAC actively supports developmental initiatives in Nigeria while contributing meaningfully to the social and cultural fabric of Canadian society.
As part of its forward-looking vision, the current President and Executive team are prioritizing youth-focused outreach initiatives designed to empower and engage the next generation. By investing in young people, the association aims to ensure that Ondo culture and values continue to thrive for years to come.
Reflecting on the significance of Black History Month, Dr. Mary A. Bamimore, one of EAC’s lead administrators, emphasized the importance of embracing identity and diversity:
“A unique aspect of being Black is the incredible mix of stories, styles, and roots we carry. That diversity is a powerful strength. Black History Month gives us the opportunity to celebrate who we are and where we come from—both individually and collectively.”
As Canada commemorates three decades of honoring Black history and achievement, the Ekimogun Association of Canada stands proud—celebrating culture, strengthening community bonds, and inspiring future generations.
