CROWN OF ENVY

By midday, suspicion had spread throughout the compound.
Several family members began whispering that Obinna might know more than he was saying.
After all, he had been behaving strangely since the envelope disappeared.
Obinna felt betrayed.
Instead of asking him what was happening, everyone had already decided that he was guilty.
His resentment deepened.
But there was one thing nobody knew.
Obinna had indeed entered Chisom's room that night.
He had seen the envelope.
He had wanted to take it.
But he had not stolen it.
Someone else had reached it first.
And now Obinna was terrified that if he revealed the truth, nobody would believe him.

THE GLORY THAT WASN'T HERS
EPISODE 1

The rain had stopped just before sunset.
Water still clung to the leaves of the mango trees surrounding the small compound, dropping occasionally onto the rusty zinc roof with a soft tap... tap... tap.
Ifeoma stood at the doorway of her mother's one-room apartment, watching the muddy road outside.
Her dress was old.
Not torn.
Not dirty.
Just old.
She had washed it so many times that the original colour had almost disappeared.

Across the road, a shiny black SUV pulled up.
Ifeoma's eyes followed it.
The back door opened.
And Amara stepped out.
She looked effortlessly beautiful.
Her long braids fell neatly over one shoulder. She wore a simple cream-coloured dress, a small handbag hanging from her wrist, and a pair of sandals that looked more expensive than everything inside Ifeoma's room combined.

“Ifeoma!”
Amara smiled as she crossed the road.
Ifeoma smiled back.
“Amara!”
They hugged.
For a moment, everything was normal.
Two girls who had grown up together.
Two friends who had shared secrets, dreams, tears and laughter.
Amara pulled away and looked at her friend.

“You've lost weight.”
Ifeoma laughed.
“Have I?”
“Yes. Your face is smaller.”
“Maybe poverty is working on me.”
Amara frowned.
“Don't say that.”
“I was joking.”
But she wasn't entirely joking.
Amara reached into her handbag and brought out a small package.
“I brought you something.”

Ifeoma opened it.
Inside was a beautiful wristwatch.
Her eyes widened.
“Amara...”
“It's yours.”
“I can't take this.”
“You can.”
“It's too expensive.”
Amara laughed.
“Everything is expensive to you.”
“Because everything is expensive to me.”
Amara became quiet.

Then she held her friend's hand.
“You know you don't have to struggle alone, right?”
Ifeoma looked at her.
That sentence should have comforted her.
Instead, something inside her tightened.
Because Amara had said it innocently.

But Ifeoma heard something else.
You are struggling.
I am not.
You need me.
I don't need you.
She forced a smile.
“I know.”

Amara hugged her again.
“I'll come back tomorrow. I have something important to tell you.”
“What?”
Amara smiled mysteriously.
“Tomorrow.”
She turned toward the SUV.
Ifeoma watched her walk away.
The vehicle disappeared down the road.
And slowly, the smile disappeared from Ifeoma's face.
She looked down at the watch in her hand.

It was beautiful.
Very beautiful.
She raised her wrist and admired it.
Then she whispered to herself...
“Why does everything look so easy for you?”
She immediately shook her head.
“No.”
She laughed softly.
“She's my friend.”
But somewhere deep inside her, something had already begun to change.
It was small.
Almost invisible.
Not hatred.
Not yet.
It was comparison.
And comparison, when fed long enough, can grow teeth

CROWN OF ENVY

Grandmother Nneka did not sleep after seeing Damian.
At dawn, she quietly went to Chief Ezeanya's room and told him what she had witnessed.
The old chief's face changed immediately.
For years, he had feared that the secret buried within his family would eventually attract dangerous people. Now, that fear had become reality.
But before they could decide what to do, a disturbing discovery was made.
The gatekeeper had disappeared.
His room was empty, his belongings were gone, and nobody knew when he had left.
Someone had clearly helped Damian enter the compound.
And that someone knew the family very well.

TANGLED LIVES

Grace is still standing inside her boutique, holding her phone to her ear after answering David's call. David tells his mother that his day at the university has been tiring. Grace listens carefully and notices that something about his voice seems different, but she doesn't pressure him.
Before ending the call, she reminds him that his father expects him home that evening. David promises to return early.
Grace puts down the phone and turns her attention back to the boutique.
Her sales manager, Adaeze, approaches her with a problem. The latest shipment from one of their clothing suppliers has arrived, but several pieces are poorly finished. Grace examines the clothes herself and immediately becomes disappointed.
The supplier has offered them at a cheaper price, but Grace refuses to sell them simply because they are cheaper. She tells Adaeze that the reputation of Grace Signature Boutique is more important than making a quick profit.
Unknown to Grace, someone connected to the supplier has deliberately allowed the inferior clothing into the shipment. The goal is to make Grace accept the poor-quality goods and damage the reputation she has spent years building.
Grace had no option than to send the shipment back.
