Macbeth
Macbeth was written in 1606. It is the story of a Scottish noble general commanding the army of King Duncan, King of Scotland. One day as Macbeth is returning with Banquo, another Scottish general, from a victorious war against a rebellion, they are confronted by three witches who prophesy to them. They tell Macbeth that he will be Thane of Cawdor and King of Scotland and go on to tell Banquo that his children will be kings.
Banquo notices that the witches have poisoned Macbeth's mind but the warning goes unheeded for Macbeth is ambitious to be King of Scotland. Lady Macbeth having learnt about the witches' prophecies at once decides that Macbeth must usurp the throne by murdering King Duncan. Chance plays it into their hands for Duncan pays them a state visit as a further mark of gratitude for Macbeth's services to the state. The couple plans and murder the king.
The king's two sons Malcolm and Donalbain flee the country and leave Macbeth the nearest person to the throne and he is crowned king. Having usurped the throne, Macbeth realises that Banquo poses a serious threat because of the witches' prophecies and successfully murders Banquo. Banquo ghosts hunt him. He therefore visits the witches to know what the future has in stock for him. He is warned to fear Macduff, an important personality in the kingdom.
He was also strongly assured he would not be conquered until the Birnam wood began to move to Dunsinane Hill and he would not be killed by a man born by a woman. Macbeth then engages in murderous acts which alienate his subjects and serious revolt begins to gather against him. His position reached a crisis point as his nobles deserted him and joined Malcolm. His wife walks in her sleep, mentally deranged by the murders they have committed.
Just before the battle begins his wife commits su***de. He then hears a report that the wood of Birnam is moving to Dunsinane. He makes up his mind to come out of his castle and fight where he meets Macduff who in face-to-face combat tells him that he was not born by a woman. Macduff kills Macbeth and his regime comes to an end. Malcolm the rightful heir immediately assumes the throne.
