During my teenage stage in life (and most of us know what comes with that stageāthe zeal to try new things, to explore, and to feel that teenage exuberance, maybe because everyone around that age is doing the same).
But then, I had someone who stood as an obstacle to my teenage light from shining. Because truly, thereās this beauty that comes with teenage years, including how your body develops steadily.
At that time, teenage life never seemed complete without having a boyfriend from your area.
Then, I had a big sister Ufoeze Chidimma who was studying psychology.
Since our house was like home for everyone, all the children in our area used to come around, especially during third-term holidays, to play.
That my big sis always told us she was studying psychologyāthat she knew all our movements, what we were thinking at that very moment, what we had thought before, and even what we would think next š«£.
Every weekend, I prayed for her not to come back so we could enjoy our freedom. But no,once it was 5 pm in the evening, I would see children coming with their bags on their head. And that meant another bad weekend for us.
From Wednesday, we would already sit together planning how to lie in uniform so our stories matched.
But lo and behold, the format she would use on us always worked we would end up spitting out the truth, which led to flogging or punishment.
She would always say: āI can read the human mind. I know exactly what youāre thinking. I just want you to say the truth yourself. I already know it, but I want to hear it from you then youāll be free from my cane.ā
The fear that she really knew what was in our minds would make us confess. And after saying the truth, the beating would follow.
After everything, we would sit down thinking: How did she find out? How did she know what was in our mind?
It even seemed like she was using some kind of charm. But now that Iām grown, Iāve realized it was just a format.
And come to think of it, thatās the same trick some pastors also use to brainwash people.
Funny enough, Iām now using the same format and I love it šššš.
