I walked into my bank to file a complaint.
I was convinced something was wrong, fraud, an error, or some kind of mistake.
The officer pulled up my statement and pointed to two charges.
Two app subscriptions. Both renewing automatically every month. Both for apps I hadn’t opened in months.
6,840 Naira, gone every single month, without me noticing once.
It wasn’t a scam. It wasn’t fraud.
It was simply two forgotten subscriptions I never got around to cancelling.
That was the moment something clicked for me.
Money rarely disappears in one big, dramatic event. It leaks, quietly and consistently, while you are busy living your life and not paying attention.
Here is what I did, and what you should do today.
First, check your subscriptions.
On iPhone, go to Settings, tap your Apple ID, then Subscriptions.
On Android, open the Google Play Store and tap Subscriptions.
Go through each one and ask yourself a simple, honest question: have I used this in the last 30 days?
If the answer is no, cancel it before you leave.
Next, open your bank statement.
Review every deduction carefully. If you cannot immediately explain a charge, do not ignore it.
Call your bank and ask.
This takes less than 15 minutes.
I found 6,840 Naira leaking out of my account in one sitting.
You might find more.
