Brief Detailed history of the origin of Okpe Kingdom
The Okpe Kingdom, located in Delta State, Nigeria, has a rich history dating back to the 17th century. Here's a brief overview
Founding: The kingdom was founded by Prince Igboze, who migrated from Benin Kingdom during the reign of Oba Ozolua (1481-1504 AD). His grandsons, Orhue, Orhoro, Evbreke, and Esezi, established the Okpe Kingdom in Orerokpe.
Ruling Houses: The four brothers formed the four ruling houses of Okpe Kingdom, which are:
- Orhue: Founded Orerokpe and is considered the most senior house.
- Orhoro: Founded Orhoro
- Evbreke: Part of the founding family.
- Esezi: Produced the first Orodje (King) of Okpe, Esezi I.
- Kingship Rotation: The Orodjeship rotates among the four ruling houses. Esezi I was chosen as the first king due to his wisdom and leadership qualities, despite being the youngest.
- Notable Monarchs:
-Esezi I (1770-1779): First Orodje of Okpe, known for laying the foundation of the kingdom's cultural and traditional practices.
-Esezi II (1945-1966): A pioneer advocate of democracy, played a key role in Nigeria's independence, and modernized the kingdom's infrastructure.
-Orhoro I (1972-2004): Promoted peace, stability, and economic development in the kingdom.
- Orhue I (2004- present): Current king, served as a Major General in the Nigerian military.
-Culture and Economy: The Okpe people are known for their love of arts, music, and dance. They are predominantly farmers, traders, and craftsmen, with a rich tradition of pottery, basketry, and wood carving.
The Okpe Union was established by a group of young Okpe nationals based in Lagos on May 16, 1930. Some of the founding members who played a key role in its formation include ยน:
