Editorial: Osun Tourism, The Forgotten Promise in Adeleke’s Agenda

When Governor Ademola Adeleke was campaigning for office, he spoke passionately about transforming Osun State into a major tourist destination, he promised to revive historic sites, develop local attractions, and make Osun the cultural heartbeat of Nigeria, but nearly three years into his administration, that promise seems to have been quietly abandoned.

To be fair, the governor has done well in other areas. His focus on roads, and infrastructure deserves some commendation, many communities now have better access routes and improved facilities. However, concerns about the quality and sustainability of some of these projects continue to stir public debate.

Even so, it’s clear that Governor Adeleke has shown real commitment to physical development and that effort should be acknowledged.

Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of tourism, despite Osun’s rich cultural and natural heritage from the Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove to Erin-Ijesa Waterfalls and countless traditional festivals there has been little visible progress.

No major investment, no concrete development plan, and no serious attempt to market the state as a tourism hub, the excitement that once surrounded Adeleke’s campaign promise to “make Osun a tourist attraction” has faded into silence.

The Ministry of Tourism has been almost invisible, the commissioner seems more occupied with attending coronations and social Owambe events than driving meaningful policy or development, the Special Adviser on Culture and Tourism is hardly seen or heard from, leaving a vacuum where leadership and initiative should be.

Then there is Laide Bakare, the actress appointed as Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Entertainment, Arts, Culture, and Tourism, her appointment initially sparked both controversy and optimism many hoped her experience in the entertainment industry would help project Osun’s creative and cultural image. Sadly, that expectation has not been met, instead of results, her public controversies have only dragged the government and the Governor’s name into unnecessary distractions, with nothing tangible to show from her office.

Osun is too rich in culture and history to have its tourism sector treated as an afterthought, the state has everything sacred sites, festivals, craftsmanship, and vibrant traditions to become a leading cultural destination in Nigeria and even beyond.

What’s missing is focused leadership, clear planning, and the political will to make it happen.

Governor Adeleke still has time to change the story, if his administration channels even half the energy it puts into infrastructure into tourism, Osun could become the cultural jewel of the southwest and increase IGR.

The governor must demand more from those entrusted with promoting culture and tourism because at the moment, the sector is simply asleep.

Osun deserves better, tourism deserves attention not neglect.

Dele Odule Questions Decision to Name National Theatre After Wole Soyinka

Veteran Nollywood actor Dele Odule has questioned the decision to rename Nigeria’s iconic National Theatre after Nobel laureate Professor Wole Soyinka.

Odule argued that the honour should have gone to late theatre legend Chief Hubert Ogunde, who he described as the true pioneer of modern Nigerian theatre.

The actor noted that while Soyinka’s global achievements are undeniable, Ogunde’s foundational role in shaping Nigeria’s performing arts industry makes him more deserving of the recognition.

Governor Adeleke Displays Omoluabi Virtue as He Prostrates Before Ooni of Ife During Project Tour

In a moment that drew admiration and respect across the ancient city of Ile-Ife, Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, demonstrated deep cultural reverence as he prostrated before the Ooni of Ife, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, during a courtesy visit to the palace on Wednesday.

Governor Adeleke, who was in Ile-Ife to inspect the ongoing Lagere Flyover Bridge and other infrastructural projects, arrived at the Ooni’s palace in the company of prominent leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), including the party’s former National Secretary, Prof. Wale Oladipo, alongside party members and supporters.

The Governor’s gesture of lying flat to greet the revered monarch was met with applause, symbolising his acknowledgment of the traditional institution and embodiment of the Yoruba Omoluabi ethos, which emphasises humility, respect, and good character.

Meanwhile, some members of the Osun All Progressives Congress (APC), in reaction to the trending video of the Governor’s visit, alleged that the gesture was a calculated political move aimed at wooing the Ife electorate and securing the Ooni’s support ahead of the 2026 gubernatorial election.

Osun PDP Accuses APC, Bola Oyebamiji (AMBO) of Intimidation with ‘Rented Crowd’ Walk of Unity

The Osun State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) and the political group loyal to former Finance Commissioner, Bola Oyebamiji, known as AMBO, who is running to unseat Governor Ademola Adeleke in 2026, of staging what has been described as an intimidating “Walk of Unity” with a rented crowd in Osogbo on Tuesday.

According to several comments from members of the PDP, the event, which saw hundreds, if not thousands, of participants marching through major streets of the state capital, was “nothing more than a political charade designed to create a false impression of popularity and cohesion within the APC.”

The PDP alleged that several of those who participated in the rally were hired from neighbouring towns and paid stipends to swell the crowd, adding that the exercise was aimed at “intimidating the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Governor Ademola Adeleke ahead of 2026.”

“This was not a genuine show of strength but a carefully staged drama to deceive the people,” one PDP member claimed.

However, members of the AMBO media team swiftly dismissed the allegations as baseless, jittery and laughable, insisting that the walk was a voluntary show of solidarity among party faithful and supporters of Bola Oyebamiji's (AMBO) gubernatorial aspiration.

“No one was forced or paid to attend. The turnout simply reflects the people’s confidence in our renewed movement,” they said.
