FG Approves ₦3.3 Trillion Plan to Restore Power Sector Stability

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a ₦3.3 trillion payment plan to clear longstanding debts in Nigeria’s power sector, marking a major step toward restoring stability and reliability in electricity supply.

The settlement covers legacy debts accumulated between 2015 and 2025, with ₦3.3 trillion agreed as full and final resolution. Implementation is already underway, as 15 power plants have signed agreements worth ₦2.3 trillion. The Federal Government has raised ₦501 billion so far, with ₦223 billion already disbursed.

The intervention is expected to strengthen the entire power value chain by ensuring power plants and gas suppliers are paid, leading to more stable electricity generation and improved service delivery.

As the sector stabilises, the reform is projected to unlock greater investment, create jobs, and support economic growth, particularly for businesses and small enterprises that depend on reliable power.

This initiative reflects the administration’s broader commitment to fixing structural challenges in the power sector, improving metering, and aligning tariffs with service quality, ultimately delivering more reliable electricity to Nigerian homes and industries.
