Trump Announces Ban on CNN, MS NOW and Politico From White House
U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that CNN, MS NOW and Politico are being banned from the White House, accusing the three media organizations of repeatedly publishing what he described as “fake news.”
Trump made the announcement on Friday, September 18, 2026, through a post on his Truth Social account. He said the ban was effective immediately and warned that other media organizations could also face similar restrictions.
Trump later defended the decision while speaking to reporters in the Oval Office. Asked why he was banning the outlets, he said they were producing what he considered false or dishonest coverage of his administration.
He also criticized the outlets for what he described as consistently negative reporting and suggested that The New York Times and The Washington Post could potentially be among other outlets targeted.
CNN and Politico respond
CNN rejected Trump's move, saying it stands behind its White House reporting team and arguing that journalists have a constitutional right to report on the government without interference.
Politico similarly said it would continue covering the Trump administration and would defend its First Amendment rights against attempts to restrict its access.
The White House Correspondents' Association also criticized the move, saying press protections should not depend on whether a president agrees with a news organization's coverage or questions.
Were the journalists actually removed?
Not immediately. This is an important part of the story.
Despite Trump's announcement that the ban was effective immediately, reports said journalists from CNN, MS NOW and Politico were still on White House grounds later that Friday, and the administration had not clearly explained how the ban would be implemented.
It therefore remained unclear whether the announcement meant excluding the outlets from all White House grounds, from press briefings, or primarily from restricted areas such as the Oval Office and presidential travel.
Why could this become a legal battle?
The announcement raises questions under the First Amendment, which protects freedom of the press.
Trump has faced similar disputes before. In 2018, his administration temporarily revoked CNN reporter Jim Acosta's White House press credentials after a confrontation with Trump. Acosta's access was later restored following a court case.
In 2025, Trump's administration also restricted Associated Press access over the AP's continued use of the name “Gulf of Mexico” rather than Trump's preferred “Gulf of America.” That dispute also resulted in litigation.
Legal experts and press-freedom organizations have argued that the government generally cannot exclude journalists from established press access simply because officials dislike their reporting. The precise legal scope, however, depends on what access the White House actually attempts to restrict.
