HOW TO MANAGE HEARTBURN IN PREGNANCY

Heartburn is very common in pregnancy because hormonal changes relax the valve between the stomach and esophagus, and as the uterus grows, it pushes up against the stomach. Here are ways to manage heartburn during pregnancy:

✅ Lifestyle & Home Remedies
1. Eat small, frequent meals instead of three large ones.
2. Avoid lying down immediately after eating – wait at least 2–3 hours.
3. Sleep with your upper body elevated (using extra pillows or a wedge).
4. Avoid trigger foods such as spicy, greasy, acidic (tomatoes, citrus), chocolate, and caffeine.
5. Chew food slowly and thoroughly to ease digestion.
6. Drink fluids between meals rather than with meals to prevent stomach overfilling.
7. Wear loose-fitting clothes – tight clothes put pressure on your stomach.
8. Maintain good posture while sitting or standing to reduce pressure on the stomach.

✅ Safe Relief Options
• Sip warm milk or eat yogurt to soothe the burning sensation.
• Chewing sugar-free gum may help increase saliva and neutralize acid.
• Doctor-approved antacids (like calcium carbonate) may be safe but should be used under medical advice.

⚠️ What to Avoid
• Self-medicating with strong antacids or acid blockers without your doctor’s approval. Some (like those containing sodium bicarbonate or magnesium trisilicate) are not safe in pregnancy.
• Overeating before bedtime – increases reflux at night.
• Lying flat after eating – makes acid reflux worse.

👉 If heartburn is severe, persistent, or associated with vomiting, weight loss, or difficulty swallowing, you should see your healthcare provider to rule out other conditions.

✅ Things to Look Out for in a Newborn Baby Girl

1. General Appearance
• Baby should look pink and fresh (not blue or very pale).
• Should have normal body tone (not too floppy or stiff).
• Moves arms and legs actively.

2. Head and Face
• Head shape may be slightly molded from delivery but should round out in days.
• Fontanelles (“soft spots”) should be present but not bulging or sunken.
• Eyes open, respond to light, no discharge or cloudiness.
• Nose open, baby able to breathe without difficulty.
• Mouth: no cleft lip or palate, tongue not too large, baby able to suck well.

3. Skin
• Skin should be smooth, without large birthmarks, blisters, or peeling rashes.
• Jaundice (yellow skin or eyes) needs monitoring.
• No bluish discoloration of lips, fingers, or toes (except mild cold-related).

4. Chest and Breathing
• Baby should breathe quietly, about 40–60 breaths per minute.
• No chest retractions, noisy breathing, or grunting.
• Heartbeats should be steady, not too fast or irregular.

5. Abdomen
• Umbilical cord area should be clean, not swollen or oozing pus.
• Belly should not be hard or very swollen.
• Passing stool (meconium in first 24 hours) and urine normally.

6. Ge****ls (Specific to Baby Girls)
• External ge****ls may look slightly swollen due to maternal hormones – this is normal.
• A little whitish discharge or even slight blood-tinged mucus (pseudo-period) is also normal.
• Both l***a should be present, no ambiguous genitalia.
• Urine should come freely from the urethra (no blockage).

7. Limbs and Movement
• Baby should move all arms and legs equally.
• No twisted or abnormal positioning of feet or hands.
• Hips stable (not dislocated).

8. Feeding and Reflexes
• Baby should suck strongly and swallow milk.
• Rooting reflex (turns toward touch on cheek), grasp reflex (grabs finger), and startle reflex should be present.

9. Neurological Signs
• Baby should respond to sound (startles at loud noise).
• Should track faces or lights briefly.
• Sleeps and wakes in cycles.

10. Warning Signs Needing Medical Check
• Persistent vomiting (especially green bile).
• Severe breathing difficulty.
• Seizures or abnormal jerking movements.
• Baby not feeding well or very weak.
• Persistent yellowing of skin/eyes before 24 hours old.
• Very swollen abdomen or failure to pass stool/urine.

👩‍🍼 In summary:
A healthy newborn baby girl should breathe well, feed well, move actively, have normal reflexes, pass urine and stool, and have normally formed genitalia and limbs. Some temporary findings (swollen ge****ls, whitish discharge, mild jaundice) may be normal, but persistent or severe symptoms should be checked by a doctor.

Do you know that a woman can be pregnant and get pregnant again ontop the initial pregnancy?

Superfetation: A Rare Phenomenon in Pregnancy

What is Superfetation?

Superfetation is an extremely rare condition where a woman becomes pregnant while she is already pregnant. In other words, a second, new pregnancy occurs when a fertilized egg implants in the uterus days or even weeks after the first pregnancy has already started. This leads to the presence of two fetuses in the uterus that are conceived at different times but develop together.

How Does It Happen?

For superfetation to occur, three very rare events must align:
1. Ovulation during pregnancy – Normally, once a woman conceives, hormones (like progesterone) prevent the release of more eggs. In superfetation, ovulation unexpectedly happens again.
2. Fertilization of the new egg – The newly released egg must be fertilized by s***m.
3. Successful implantation – The fertilized egg must manage to implant in the uterus, even though it is already occupied by the first pregnancy.

Because pregnancy naturally suppresses ovulation and implantation, these steps are highly unlikely, which explains why superfetation is extremely rare.

How is it Different from Twins?
• Twins (especially fraternal twins) are conceived from two eggs released and fertilized during the same menstrual cycle, meaning they are the same gestational age.
• Superfetation babies are conceived at different times, so they can differ in age (days or weeks apart). This may result in size and developmental differences between them in the womb.

Signs and Diagnosis

Superfetation is very difficult to detect. Most times, it is suspected when:
• Ultrasound shows fetuses with noticeably different sizes and developmental stages.
• Doctors rule out conditions like intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), where one baby is simply smaller due to health reasons.
• There is a clear difference in gestational age (for example, one baby appears weeks younger).

Possible Causes and Risk Factors
• Assisted Reproductive Techniques (ART) such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) may increase the chances, since multiple embryos can be transferred at different times.
• Hormonal irregularities that fail to suppress ovulation during pregnancy.
• High fertility rates, though still extremely uncommon.

Risks and Complications
• Babies may be born prematurely due to differences in gestational age.
• The younger baby may face challenges if delivered early to match the older one’s timeline.
• Mothers may have higher risks of complications, similar to multiple pregnancies (like twin pregnancies).

Management
• Close monitoring with regular ultrasounds.
• Careful planning of delivery to balance the health of both babies.
• In most cases, babies are delivered via cesarean section to reduce risks.

Famous Reported Cases
• Only a handful of medically documented cases exist worldwide.
• Some women have delivered two babies weeks apart in growth, yet both survived healthy.

Conclusion

Superfetation is one of nature’s rarest reproductive phenomena. While fascinating, it poses significant medical challenges due to mismatched gestational ages. With modern prenatal care and medical monitoring, however, outcomes can still be positive for both mother and babies.

Episiotomy 👇🏾

If a woman has never had a baby the birth canal is usually very tight and sometimes when delivering a baby for the first time the canal may be so tight that it does not allow the baby come out easily.

If the baby is left to force his or her way out it could result in terrible tears that may not be easy to repair and could also cause excessive bleeding .

So what your midwife might do is to give you an episiotomy which is basically a cut made in the perineum
(area between the va**na and anus)and this cut is done when there is contraction .

Once the episiotomy is given the baby slides easily out of the birth canal.

Once the baby and placenta have been delivered the next step is to stitch the episiotomy.

For episiotomy care you need to do these things

Get a big bowl you can sit in comfortably

You fill your sitz bowl or regular bowl with warm not HOT water ooo

Except you want to come back for another suturing or the tear wasn’t okay for you maybe you want more

put in the salt in warm water and sit in the water for about 10 mins .

It is good to do it twice a day both morning and evening.

The episiotomy site gets a bit swollen and can be quite painful .

You might not even walk well the first few days and going to the toilet might be a nightmare

So please during these period try and take plenty of fluids, fruits and vegetables so you won’t have difficulty in stooling

Plaese my people I’m saying it again

do not use hot water for sitz bath it can damage your stitches and you may have to go back for re stitching.

It is also advisable to tell the nurses to check your stitches before you are discharged from the hospital

Finally for you to avoid va**na tear
Your midwife has a role to play
She has to use lot of olive oil to guilde the baby
If you’re lucky to have a skilled midwife you may escape having va**na tear

you too try to cooperate with your midwife during labour
Some of you will not keep a good position when the baby is coming and the baby might even end up giving you tear

Na that one bad pass, because the tear may not be in uniform

We all have different stories to tell about how we survived in Nursing.... What's your story line?....

📝A Nurse shares hers🥰

When I wanted to get enrolled in nursing education, my husband took me to his friends wife who happened to be an RN holder in nursing so she can encourage and direct me on how to go about it,on getting to her instead of the encouragement she went ahead to tell my husband not to allow me to go for nursing that I can’t do it,nursing is difficult, single people have not passed nursing talk more of a pregnant married woman like me, Oga don’t waste your money blc nursing is fail and fail out😱😱She said all this to my husband 😭😭🙄🙄

Immediately my mood changed, she went ahead to tell my husband to open a shop for me to do buying and selling 🙄🙄🧐since i already have cerficate (HND) in med lab (Lab technician ), BSC in microbiology in view then, 🧐🧐I came home sad 😢 😩😩

But my husband said NO if she, herself made it through nursing that he believe in me I will do better♥️♥️♥️he said all that to me when we got home💃🏻💃🏻💃🏻💃🏻♥️♥️♥️

My people the beautiful Auntie Nurse with RN is still with her RN only certificate BUT am done with RN,RM,final year in BNSC in nursing presently😋😋😋😀

🩺 Medical Overview of the Newborn

This image shows a newborn infant immediately after delivery. The following points highlight important clinical observations and neonatal care considerations:

🔹 Vernix Caseosa – The white, creamy substance covering the skin. It is protective in utero, prevents skin maceration, and has antibacterial properties.

🔹 Umbilical Cord Clamp – A blue clamp is applied to the umbilical stump. This prevents blood loss and contamination. Cord care is crucial to avoid infections such as omphalitis.

🔹 Blood Stains – Minimal blood is expected after delivery and usually comes from the placenta or cord, not active bleeding from the baby.

🔹 Physiological Flexion – The baby is seen in a semi-flexed posture, which is normal for a newborn due to intrauterine positioning.

🔹 Thermoregulation – Newborns lose heat quickly. Wrapping in warm cloth or initiating skin-to-skin (kangaroo care) is essential to prevent hypothermia.

🔹 Initial Assessment – Within the first minute, the APGAR score is assessed:

Appearance (skin color)

Pulse (heart rate)

Grimace (reflex irritability)

Activity (muscle tone)

Respiration (breathing effort)

🔹 Early Neonatal Care Includes:

Clearing airway if obstructed

Ensuring effective breathing

Initiating breastfeeding within the first hour

Monitoring for jaundice, hypoglycemia, or congenital anomalies

Providing Vitamin K injection to prevent bleeding disorders

---

✨ Conclusion: Every newborn deserves immediate and appropriate care to ensure a healthy start in life. Proper cord care, thermal protection, and early feeding are key to survival and growth.

"Please, I need help, I put to bed, and this is what my baby's leg looks like. I haven't seen this kind of thing before. What could be the cause, please?"

This was how a mother cried out after having a baby with this condition, honestly, my heart squeezed when I saw the picture.

As a midwife, I have come across cases like this. What you see in the photo looks like clubfoot, a condition where a baby is born with one or both feet twisted out of position. It is more common than people think, and the good news is that it can be corrected.

It is not caused by witchcraft or something the mother did wrong. Most times, it just happens during development in the womb. This is why I always advise pregnant women to do anomaly scans. Early medical attention is key. With proper care, physiotherapy, or casting and sometimes surgery, these babies grow up walking and running like every other child. So please, if you are seeing this in your newborn, don’t panic or hide it out of fear or shame. Speak with your midwife or doctor as early as possible.
There's hope! You are not alone.
