The Nduka Empire had one rule.
Nobody got close to Tesla Nduka.
Not because she was cruel.
Not because she believed she was better than everyone else.
But because being the only daughter of billionaire Richard Nduka meant that every person who smiled at her could be hiding an agenda.
Tesla had learned that lesson early.
At twenty-four, she was already the acting CEO of one of the biggest business empires in the country.
She sat behind her father's enormous mahogany desk, staring at the documents scattered before her.
Three acquisition proposals.
Two international contracts.
A board meeting scheduled for nine the following morning.
And twenty-seven missed calls from her father.
She rubbed her temples.
"Perfect."
Her assistant, Clara, stood quietly by the door.
"Ma'am?"
Tesla looked up.
"What?"
"Your father wants you to attend dinner tonight."
Tesla sighed.
"Tell him I'm busy."
"I already did."
"And?"
"He said he'll come to your office himself if you don't show up."
Tesla leaned back in her chair.
"Of course he did."
Her father had been doing this for months.
Dinner.
Family meetings.
Security meetings.
Business meetings.
Everything seemed to revolve around keeping Tesla safe.
Sometimes she wondered whether her father remembered that she was an adult.
She picked up her phone.
Another message from Divine appeared.
Divine: Sorry, babe. Busy tonight. We'll talk later.
Tesla stared at the message.
Again.
Always later.
She typed a reply.
Deleted it.
Typed another.
Deleted that too.
Finally, she locked her phone.
She was tired of begging for attention from someone who was supposed to love her.
"Clara."
"Yes, ma'am?"
"Cancel everything after 6."
Clara blinked.
"You're going to dinner?"
Tesla stood.
"No."
She grabbed her handbag.
"I'm going home."

7:14 P.M.
Tesla's black Prado keep pulled into the Nduka mansion.
Security guards immediately opened the gates.
But Tesla noticed something unusual.
There were more guards than normal.
Her eyes narrowed.
"What happened?"
The driver glanced at her through the mirror.
"Mr. Nduka increased security today."
"Why?"
"I don't know, ma'am."
Tesla stepped out of the vehicle.
Before she could enter the mansion, her father appeared.
Richard Nduka was a powerful man in his early sixties. Even with gray beginning to appear in his hair, his presence could silence an entire boardroom.
"You're late."
Tesla raised an eyebrow.
"Good evening to you too…Dad."
Richard ignored the sarcasm.
"We need to talk."
"About?"
"Your security."
Tesla groaned.
"Dad..."
"Tesla."
His voice became serious.
"Someone has been asking questions about you."
Her expression changed.
"What kind of questions?"
"Where you live. Where you work. Your schedule."
Tesla's fingers tightened around her handbag.
"Who?"
"We don't know yet."
"And you think adding more guards will solve the problem?"
"I think keeping you alive is more important than your opinion of my security decisions."
Tesla looked away.
She hated when her father sounded afraid.
Richard lowered his voice.
"That's why I've hired someone."
Tesla frowned.
"I already have security."
"This is different."
A man stepped forward from behind the doorway.
Tesla turned.
And stopped.
He was tall.
Broad-shouldered.
His dark shirt was neatly fitted, his sleeves rolled to his forearms.
His hair was cut low, and his expression was calm almost unreadable.
His eyes met Tesla's.
For a brief moment, neither of them spoke.
"This is Nathan," Richard said.
Nathan gave a respectful nod.
"Ma'am."
Tesla stared at him.
Then at her father.
"You're joking."
"I'm not."
"You hired a personal bodyguard?"
"Yes."
"I don't need one."
Nathan remained silent.
Richard folded his arms.
"Starting tomorrow, Nathan goes everywhere with you."
Tesla laughed once.
"Absolutely not."
Nathan finally spoke.
"I understand your concern."
Tesla looked at him.
"My concern?"
"Having someone follow you everywhere can feel intrusive."
She studied him.
At least he understood.
Then he continued.
"But your safety is my responsibility."
Tesla's eyes narrowed.
"And if I don't want you around?"
Nathan didn't blink.
"Then I’m sorry.. You don’t have anything to do about it."
Tesla looked at her father.
Richard smiled.
"I already signed the contract."
Tesla's mouth fell open.
"Dad!"
"You're welcome."

The next morning, Tesla walked into Nduka Holdings wearing a cream colored pantsuit, her long natural curls falling over her shoulders.
The entire lobby seemed to notice her.
But Tesla wasn't looking at the employees.
She was looking at one person.
Nathan.
He stood beside the elevator.
Black suit.
Low-cut hair.
Expression unreadable.
Tesla stopped.
"You're wearing a suit?"
Nathan looked down at himself.
"That's generally what bodyguards wear."
"I thought you would look less... formal."
"What did you expect?"
Tesla shrugged.
"I don't know."
The elevator doors opened.
She stepped inside.
Nathan followed.
He pressed the button.
The doors closed.
Silence.
She glanced sideways.
Nathan stood few feet away.
"Do you always stare at people?"
"I'm not staring."
"You've been watching me since I walked in."
"I'm doing my job."
Tesla scoffed.
"Of course."
The elevator stopped.
When the doors opened, Tesla walked out.
Nathan followed.
She turned around.
"You don't have to follow me into every room."
"I do."
"Why?"
"Because my job is to keep you safe."
Tesla stared at him.
"You might be the most annoying person I've ever met."
Nathan's expression barely changed.
"I've been told worse."
For the first time that morning, Tesla almost smiled.
Almost….

TWO WEEKS LATER
Nathan became part of Tesla's routine.
He waited outside meetings.
He stood near her car.
He accompanied her to business dinners.
He even knew how she took her coffee.
Tesla pretended not to notice.
But she did.
She noticed everything.
She also noticed that Nathan never asked unnecessary questions.
He didn't care about her father's money.
He didn't flatter her.
He didn't try to impress her.
He simply did his job.
And somehow, that made him different from everyone else.
Especially Divine.
That evening, Tesla sat alone in her office.
Her phone rang.
DIVINE CALLING.
She answered immediately.
"Hello?"
"Hey, babe."
Tesla smiled faintly.
"Where have you been?"
"Busy."
"Again?"
"Tesla, please. I have things going on."
She became quiet.
"I miss you."
Silence.
Then Divine sighed.
"I'll make it up to you."
"When?"
"I don't know yet but I promise."
The call ended a few minutes later.
Tesla stared at her phone.
Her eyes became glossy.
She quickly blinked away the emotion.
She refused to cry.
Not over Divine.
Not over anyone.
A knock came at the door.
Nathan entered.
"Are you ready to leave?"
Tesla looked up.
"Not yet."
He noticed her expression.
"You okay?"
"I'm fine."
Nathan didn't move.
"You don't look fine."
Tesla's voice hardened.
"I said I'm fine."
He nodded.
"Understood."
He turned to leave.
"Wait."
Nathan stopped.
Tesla looked at him.
For some reason, she didn't want him to leave.
"Can you stay?"
Nathan hesitated.
"Of course."
He pulled a chair across the room and sat.
Neither of them spoke.
For the first time in weeks, Tesla didn't feel like she had to pretend.
And Nathan didn't ask her to explain.
He simply stayed.
That was the beginning.
Neither of them knew it yet.
But sometimes the most dangerous relationships don't begin with a confession.
Sometimes they begin with silence.
A little understanding.
A little trust.
And one person staying when everyone else has already walked away.
Outside the office window, the city lights glittered.
Tesla looked at Nathan.
Nathan looked back.
