The first king widely recognized as the King of all England was Æthelstan, who reigned from 924 to 939 AD. The grandson of Alfred the Great, Æthelstan united the various Anglo-Saxon and Viking kingdoms through both military conquest and strategic diplomacy. In 927, he captured York from the Vikings, effectively bringing all of England under one crown for the first time. His reign marked the emergence of a centralized English monarchy, and he is often praised for his legal reforms, support of the Church, and efforts to standardize coinage and governance across the realm. Æthelstan’s leadership laid the foundation for a unified English nation and earned him respect across Europe during his lifetime.
